A desire to share his knowledge and experience saw Trevor Jones become a construction teacher at TAFE Queensland's Roma campus.

With over 40 years of practical industry experience, Trevor has worked across most facets of the carpentry industry. From civil works, residential work and bridgework to even fitting out multi-million dollar yachts.

With decades of experience under his belt he decided to share his experience with the next generation, joining the TAFE Queensland team in 2019.

"I started teaching with a desire to share my knowledge and experience, to support and mentor young people entering the industry," Trevor said.

"I wanted to improve in some way the standard of work I was seeing in the industry by teaching."

"Due to my past experience as a student, and recognising that TAFE Queensland is a quality training provider, I wanted to be a part of that," he said.

Trevor said the best thing about his job is the interaction between TAFE Queensland students and staff.

"My most memorable student was a TAFE at School student. A diligent student who applied himself to his studies and supported his classmates. He produced quality work and set high standards for himself and he will be an asset to the industry," said Trevor.

What Trevor enjoys the most about his industry is the feeling of pride when he creates something new.

"There's nothing like the sense of satisfaction you feel when you've completed a job and have a satisfied client," he said.

Since starting his role as a teacher, Trevor has been pleased to see TAFE Queensland keeps up with industry by engaging with industry bodies.

"TAFE Queensland has amazing facilities that mirror current industry standards and practices. And I stay current by still working in the industry," said Trevor.

For someone looking to get into the industry, Trevor's advice is to get as much work experience as possible, learn all you can, and talk to good tradespeople in the field.

"Attending TAFE is an important part of the trade and is critical to producing a high-quality tradesperson for the industry," he said.

And for anyone thinking about studying at TAFE Queensland Trevor's advice is, "Do it! TAFE Queensland gives you high-quality training with industry experts."
