With healthcare professionals needed now more than ever, there is no better time for anyone considering a rewarding career in the healthcare sector to begin studying towards it. Melanie Loynes is one such person who is poised to take advantage of opportunities in the medical industry after turning her love for science into a study journey with TAFE Queensland that will earn her a new career.

“I’m a self-proclaimed nerd who has a deep love for science, books and medicine. My dream is to become a forensic pathologist but in the meantime, I’d love to work in a microbiology or pathology laboratory,” says Melanie.

“With this in mind, I decided to study at TAFE Queensland so I could gain employable skills to get work within a laboratory while I pursue further study that could also lead me into a medical career.”

Melanie’s love of science saw her study the Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement (MSL20118) while in high school and after graduating, she continued studying, completing a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills (MSL30118).

“Completing my certificate II piqued my interest to continue studying the topic. When I graduated, I deferred my university studies to complete a certificate III in laboratory skills with TAFE Queensland to build employable skills in the field I wished to work in," she said.

“I stayed with TAFE Queensland because I enjoyed the practical classes that were both interesting and hands-on. It has allowed me to become familiar with how a laboratory operates and how to use its equipment."

“After completing this certificate, I decided to continue developing my skills through studying the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques (MSL40118), and I plan on studying the Diploma of Laboratory Technology (MSL50118) after that,” continues Melanie.

Melanie’s next step is to continue studying while working as a laboratory technician and keeping her sights firmly set on becoming a doctor.

Lofty goals for the 20-year-old, but she credits TAFE Queensland’s teachers, facilities and course content for giving her a solid technical foundation and the confidence to achieve her career goal of becoming a medical professional.

“Studying at TAFE Queensland has allowed me to get an internship with a laboratory, something I wouldn’t have been able to do without the knowledge, connections and skills I obtained through studying here,” says Melanie.

“My teachers were all very knowledgeable, friendly approachable and supportive. They answered questions, provided feedback on assessments and connected us with work opportunities."

“The facilities also closely emulated a commercial laboratory within the industry which made it the ideal learning environment. Furthermore, my study experience was made more enjoyable by studying with like-minded individuals."

“I can say that TAFE Queensland is a smart investment in your future. It’s helped me to achieve my goal of working within a laboratory and has given me the skills to do so confidently and competently,” concludes Melanie.
