Melanie Carling is passionate about teaching and helping her students flourish as they study towards becoming qualified nurses.

As TAFE Queensland’s Team Manager for Nursing South, Melanie's passion resonates from both being in the industry for over 20 years and having been a nursing student herself.

Having completed studies in both aged care and nursing at TAFE Queensland, she knows exactly what the new generation of students are going through as they work towards becoming nurses.

"I love being a teacher at TAFE Queensland. I’m part of a team of highly qualified, passionate and hardworking people from the industry who want the best for our students, and we love helping," said Melanie.

Being from the industry, Melanie knows what challenges many of her students face, having balanced family, work and studying while working towards her Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115).

“I had five children at home while I studied my diploma and I worked nine nights a fortnight in a dementia centre,” says Melanie.

While working in nursing acute care she continued studying, later graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing and then went on to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116), which brought her back to our Caboolture campus as a teacher.

From there, she went on to complete a graduate diploma in adult and vocational education, and has been the Team Manager for Nursing (South) at TAFE Queensland's Loganlea and Alexandra Hills campuses since July 2018.

“I’m passionate about guiding and mentoring the next generation of nurses to be the best they can be. I love using my skills and experience to mentor and train students, building their skills and professionalism and helping them be the health practitioners of the future," she said.

"The best part of my job is watching my students have that light bulb moment as they bloom into nurses. Second only to seeing them graduate, and going out into the world to start their careers," continued Melanie.

"Having been there and done that, both personally and professionally, I can empathise with what our nursing students go through while they study with us. I’ve seen and experienced it all before, and sharing my knowledge and experience helps keep them on track and guide them through their course,” Melanie continues.

For anyone thinking about studying nursing, either for their first career or if they’re looking at changing careers, Melanie encourages people to inquire. According to Melanie, TAFE Queensland staff are always happy to help anyone study towards their chosen career.

"The opportunities that open up to graduates with a TAFE Queensland nursing diploma are immense. Nurses work in challenging but supportive environments and you go home each day with a sense of satisfaction and achievement," she said.

"Studying a nursing at TAFE Queensland is a great way to discover your life’s purpose, and learn in-demand skills to help those in need."

"Nursing is a diverse and fulfilling career with so many opportunities. It's a career with so many specialist areas that will see you helping save lives, bring happiness to patients and their families, and comfort to those in need," said Melanie.
