TAFE Queensland teacher Heather Smith is passionate about seeing her students flourish as they graduate, on the way to being qualified massage therapists.

Heather has been a teacher for over 25 years. She has taught in primary schools, high schools, and now a range of age groups at TAFE Queensland for the last four years.

"I love being a part of the staff at TAFE Queensland. I see a lot of hard working, well-meaning people wanting the best outcome for students. The teachers are here to help, and are highly qualified, passionate, industry leaders," she said.

Heather herself is passionate about guiding and mentoring students to be the best they can be.

"I am eager to support anyone who wants to improve themselves, build skills and professionalism for their future," said Heather.

"The best part of my job is definitely seeing students blossom and flourish as they graduate, going out into the world ready for their careers," she continued.

"My most memorable student is a young girl who has Asperger’s Syndrome who worked incredibly hard to achieve the academic standard required for the diploma. She applied herself whole-heartedly to demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge needed to graduate."

"She was a true inspiration that we can all achieve something if we set our mind to it."

In the wider massage therapy industry there is a huge push to continue to certify and regulate practitioners, something Heather also cares deeply about.

"There are a lot of unqualified operators out there that claim to be massage therapists. I am passionate about getting this information out to the public so people can make wise choices about who they choose for massage treatments," said Heather.

For someone looking to get into a massage career, Heather recommends they have a few professional massages prior.

"Massage therapy is such a diverse and fulfilling job and there are so many career opportunities where you can help people. I love helping people and supporting them towards better health and quality of life," she said.

For someone thinking about studying, Heather tells people to just do it.

"The opportunities and doorways that a TAFE Queensland course opens can give you a real sense of satisfaction and achievement," she said.

"Studying at TAFE Queensland is a great opportunity to improve your life, your confidence, and a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and experience new things."
