To be successful and feel a sense of accomplishment in her career, Nadine Mammone has always sought out challenging work that allows her to learn along the way.

Working as a project coordinator with a software company, she saw an opportunity to increase her engagement with clients and internal stakeholders by enhancing her skills through studying a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice (BSB41515) with TAFE Queensland.

“In my current role, I work in the background to keep things on track and moving forward so that others who are involved can concentrate on their areas of responsibility and ultimately to ensure our customers have a smooth experience,” says Nadine.

“My company wanted to enhance my role by giving me a framework to work from and TAFE Queensland offered the right course with practical training that I could fit around my work hours — so I jumped at the chance!”

Having a family and not a lot of free time, Nadine was a little apprehensive about returning to the classroom, particularly as she hadn’t been in a classroom for over 20 years! But her fears were quickly alleviated when she looked into the course content.

“As I’m working fulltime, it was extremely important that if I was going to spend time away from my family for study, I wanted to ensure I was studying a relevant course that provided a recognised qualification. And I’m getting the exact hands-on, practical application I was looking for.”

Nadine credits the experienced project management professionals that teach her — while studying alongside classmates who are fulltime workers from different industries — for enhancing her learning.

“Our lecturer supports and encourages us to share our experiences and uses examples from each of our industries when explaining project management concepts to us," she said

“Knowing that we were all fulltime employees with competing demands, he made himself available to answer our questions, clarify concepts and provide feedback on our work,” said Nadine.

After graduating, Nadine was able to quickly implement her new skills across the multiple projects she's responsible for.

Thanks to her studies, she’s now more confident and capable when managing a project by knowing who has “the ball” and where it needs to go next.

She’s also considering enhancing her career further through studying a diploma in project management, leadership and management or business to round out her skills.

“The Certificate IV in Project Management Practice (BSB41515) has given me the ability to view a project as a whole to allocate resources, monitor and manage priorities, develop strategies and ultimately, deliver successful outcomes," she said.

“I can now better predict threats or impediments and remove roadblocks while being able to pivot and problem-solve to ensure everyone is on the same page,” concludes Nadine.
