After initially moving to Melbourne in 2015, Mike spent a year in Sydney before settling in Queensland to enjoy the warmer weather. It's a big difference from his previous life in Hong Kong.
"Previously I worked in a factory, but in the end I love the art of nails and being a nail technician. I have years of experience in the industry but needed to formalise my qualification," said Mike.
Mike chose TAFE Queensland because it was well known, and also for its facilities and connections with industry.
"I have learnt a lot, more than just nails as the Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30315) also includes beauty, eyebrows, eyelashes and spray tanning. This is all new to me and very exciting and we will offer these services as well," he said.
Mike's goal is to own his own studio for nails and other beauty services. His aim is to offer a high level of service compared to the competition, and he is determined to improve on his existing skills with further studies.
"I'm currently preparing my nail workshop for when I'm finished my course — which I'll have completed very soon — and then myself and my wife will be fully qualified. My wife has also been studying the same class with me," said Mike.
Mike said he and his wife enjoyed getting to experience the unique Australian culture during their studies.
"TAFE Queensland has the technology and we have learnt a lot by coming to a class, the Australian culture and the industry culture is very different from where I worked in Hong Kong," said Mike.
"I really enjoyed the social aspect, I was very happy as the teacher and classmates were very nice and very helpful," he said.
When asked if he would recommend TAFE Queensland to people looking to get into the beauty industry Mike didn't hesitate.
"I recommend the nail technology class at TAFE Queensland because it is very professional and up to date with industry standards."
