Livestock agent and auctioneer Sarah Packer always knew her future career would be in the rural industry.

Born and bred on a cattle and sheep property near Roma, the country lifestyle has always been in Sarah's blood.

Working as a livestock agent and auctioneer, Sarah’s day involves drafting, handling, and presenting cattle in addition to liaising with clients and being involved with sales and marketing.

Having completed a Certificate II in Rural Operations (AHC21216) and Certificate III in Rural Operations (AHC32816) during Years 11 and 12 gave Sarah an enormous advantage upon leaving school. The TAFE at School program allowed her to kick start her career while she was still at school, and provided pathway opportunities further study.

Now aged 26, Sarah has fond memories of her time at TAFE Queensland. Remembering the opportunities for hands-on experiences that the program included.

"I recall a particular lesson where handling sheep provided entertainment for the students," she said.

Although Sarah already had a broad range of experience from her upbringing, studying at TAFE Queensland provided additional exposure to the industry, including visits to external organisations.

“I felt that by studying rural operations gave me the advantage I needed to get to my career goal faster."

Sarah recommends doing the program as early as possible as it provides school leavers with practical resources to launch their careers.

"The TAFE at School program provides students with strong foundational skills and my advice to others is ‘don’t wait'," she said.
