Passing your knowledge onto the next generation, helping others achieve their goals, and working in an industry you're passionate about — what’s not to love about teaching in the hospitality industry?

Ben has over 30 years' experience in the hospitality industry. He has completed an Associate Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management and worked for some of Australia’s biggest catering companies.

"I've worked in a variety of operational and management roles and always enjoyed the challenges," said Ben.

"I started teaching and mentoring at a residential conference centre cooking, as well as front of house at a boarding school," he said.

Ben started with TAFE Queensland in 2019 while working and managing his own business.

"I enjoy growing and cooking food and have a range of quality skills and experience to share. I now get to pass this knowledge on, teaching across south-western Queensland including Miles, Roma, Cunnamulla, St George and Emerald. I have a passion for Queensland from east to west," said Ben.

As a part of the TAFE Queensland team, Ben is thankful for the resources and support his students have access to that enable them to reach for what they want to achieve.

"The best thing about my job is being a part of a student's educational growth. Seeing them complete and achieve their goals can be very rewarding," he said.

What Ben enjoys most about the industry is the people, culture and creativity. Plus with plenty of change, adaption and innovation happening in the industry, there's always something new for him to learn.

"I stay current with the latest trends by working in the industry. I listen, research, and experience current needs and future trends to meet student and employer needs," said Ben.

For anyone looking to get into the hospitality industry, Ben says it offers a great variety of work across Australia and the world. Plus, it gives you a range of life skills that are transferable to different industries and your personal life.

"Studying is a great way to communicate what skills and education you have. Getting a recognised qualification can be very rewarding and help build your confidence," said Ben.
