Natasha Hackett has never been more grateful to have a full booking sheet and a busy day on her feet ahead of her.

Until recently the owner of Cocoa Lux, a small beauty salon at Clayfield, had been forced to close her doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Excited by the prospect of reopening in line with the Queensland Government’s Roadmap to easing Queensland’s restrictions, Natasha was one of the first people to enrol in TAFE Queensland's COVID Safe training programs.

“To begin with, lockdown was a stressful time. The pressure of ongoing bills — commercial rent, personal mortgage etc — with no incoming wage was frightening and a position I had never been in before. I tried to take comfort in the fact that I wasn’t the only one in this situation,” Natasha, who has more than 20-years’ industry experience said.

“I’m also grateful to live in a country where our Government has offered financial relief and support. I’m not sure I would have survived for much longer without it. I most certainly will never take having a day’s work for granted again.”

Natasha has since reopened her salon but not before completing the online COVID Safe Training program required of all beauty therapy services.

“It gave me the confidence to return to work with the latest COVID information so I could protect both my clients and myself. I make sure all of my clients are aware that I have completed the course so they feel more comfortable too,” she said.

“I found it easy to navigate through the enrolment process and completed the course quickly. I would recommend it to anyone who is returning to the workforce so they can operate safely."

TAFE Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mary Campbell said TAFE Queensland is proud to be supporting Queensland workers and businesses as they open their doors once again.

“As the economy restarts, it’s important that we take precautions to reduce the chance of COVID-19 outbreaks,” Ms Campbell said.

“These programs are funded by the Queensland Government and may form part of a business’s COVID Safe plan to safeguard our community. TAFE Queensland is proud to be playing an important part in helping businesses reopen and getting people back to work safely.”

Two industry-relevant COVID Safe Training courses are available – COVID Safe for Dining In and COVID Safe for Beauty Therapy, Nail Salons, Tanning, Tattoo Parlours and Spas. Both courses are offered at no cost to students and take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

TAFE Queensland has also developed a series of free micro-credentials and online skill sets that people can use to retrain or upskill during the pandemic. These micro-credentials can help people improve career prospects, maintain currency, or develop skills in a new area. They've been developed to be responsive to local, national and international demands and changing industry needs.
