Corbin Matsui, who is currently 18, studied the Certificate II in Health Support Services (HLT23215) and the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (HLT33115) while in high school.
“I completed both of my health services certificates through the TAFE Queensland while at school, and I enjoyed it so much, I enrolled to study the certificate III."
“I had no hesitation enrolling with TAFE Queensland because they teach in a way that builds practical skills to get job-ready to join the industry,” Corbin said.
After discussing career options with a family friend, the Caboolture native decided to set his sights on a career in aged care as it is a resilient industry and with a high number of jobs in the local area and across the globe.
Corbin says that he loves his course, and his recent placement with Sunnymeade Park Aged Care Community allowed him to put his skills into practice with real patients - cementing his passion for his career.
“Working with real patients on placement is a wonderful experience,” he said.
“I particularly enjoy helping people, having personal interactions with patients and being able to chat and a joke with them."
“I’m very lucky to have been so well prepared in the classroom and wards, but nothing compares to the real-life experience and learning on the job – it’s priceless.”
Corbin said the key to his success was practical learning style of the course, with excellent teachers guiding him along the way.
“The teachers have so much experience and it really shows. They’re able to deliver the course with enthusiasm and humour. They also knew what the industry needs and what employers are looking for in their employees,” continues Corbin.
“I have been on a huge learning curve with many challenges, but the hands on learning environment and my teachers certainly helped me get a start my career.”
He now has his sights set on continuing his studies, and plans on enrolling in the Certificate IV in Ageing Support (CHC43015) with the eventual goal of working in a care facility local to the area.
