Take your plumbing career to the next level with this mid-level technical course. Develop the advanced skills and knowledge required for a range of specialisations and/or industry licences.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, plumbing is a skill in demand with around 29,000 job openings anticipated over the next five years. Adding a specialisation or industry licence to your existing qualifications will help you enhance your job prospects and boost your earning potential. 

If you choose to complete the full qualification, depending on location, you have the option to specialise in:

  • Hydraulics Services Design
  • Plumbing Operations

Alternatively licencing endorsements can be achieved by completion of selected units, in areas including:

  • Commissioning and Maintaining Backflow Prevention Devices
  • Thermostatic Mixing Valves

You also have the option to complete selected units only to be eligible to apply for a range of industry licences including:

  • Drainer licence (Occupational)
  • Full Gas Work licence
  • Plumbing licence (Occupational)

Entry requirements

It is a mandatory requirement of the national Training Package that students have completed a relevant trade qualification or equivalent (Certificate III in Plumbing). 

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that students also hold:   

  • a current Provisional Plumbers Licence; 
  • a current Provisional Drainers Licence; or 
  • a current Interim Gas Work Licence

Students will be required to attend class with an electronic device (laptop or tablet) to complete the online learning components.

Need to know

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills subsidised price, you must:

  • hold a plumbing trade (Certificate III) qualification (evidence must be supplied prior to enrolment).
  • be aged 15 years or over, and no longer at school
  • permanently reside in Queensland
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen
  • not hold or be currently enrolled in a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification (does not include qualifications completed at school or foundation skills training).

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
