Government

We offer a range of solutions including fully customised, planning, accredited training, traineeships, RPL and micro-credentials for all levels of government.

The provision of high quality public administration and services to local communities, Queensland and Australia is the biggest priority of government. Thankfully those in the service are talented and inspiring individuals who are committed to making a difference. Policy changes, the introduction of new initiatives and changing demands of the public mean ongoing changes. Because of this it’s important that the people delivering our public services are supported, well-trained and highly skilled.

Our focus is two-fold—working to support you, our government leaders, to ensure your employees maintain a contemporary skillet and developing training and skills development programs that build skills in communities and industries. We understand the sometimes complex and varied requirements of government. Our solutions bring together the best training content, technology and delivery methods to suit your department or council.

Solutions and services

TAFE Queensland has a range of solutions available to suit you. Our work is completely scalable, whether you're looking for a one-off training program or a fully customised enterprise solution.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is perfect for governments that have experienced employees who don’t hold a qualification.  We work with individuals to recognise their skills, and complete a gap training plan. RPL can be useful in more general business, government policy qualifications and more specialised areas like conservation, horticulture, cleaning operations, library services and more.

We offer a range of quality accredited training options. We are registered to deliver over 500 qualifications, which means we can help you develop skills in almost every industry. We also offer qualifications to support government administration including the Diploma of Government (PSP50116).

We offer over 120 different apprenticeships and different 100 traineeships. Apprentices and trainees will work towards the completion of a nationally recognised qualification while learning valuable skills at work and under the guidance of our experienced and specialist teachers. Choose TAFE Queensland as your supervising registered training organisation.

Micro-credentials are short, highly-targeted courses designed to help employees improve specific skills. We can create micro-credentials specific to your needs, or provide access to our existing suite including cultural competence, digital literacy and research. Micro-credentials are a cost-effective way of providing professional development to your staff to upskill them and keep them current.

Often the training programs we create for government clients are fully customised. They can range from smaller skills interventions, like induction programs, to complex and contextualised solutions like our work with the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. No matter the scale you’re after, we can develop a high quality program that will give you results.

Workforce development planning ensures you have the right people in the right place at the right time. As part of our process we work with you to create a plan that:

- outlines required training to fill skills and knowledge gaps

- identifies future needs as your business changes and industry demands diversify

- addresses downtime, turnover and recruitment costs

- improves staff retention and morale

Our people our expertise

We employ over 2,500 teachers and trainers across Queensland. All of our teaching and training staff are appropriately qualified with significant industry experience, meaning we can meet your skills and workforce development needs across Australia. Our expert team is dedicated to the skills requirement of the public service and developing programs to support the provision of services to individuals, communities and industry.

We specialise in building hands-on skills. Local government provides essential services in a broad array of areas. Our training can help ensure these services are delivered to the highest standard for communities. Our specialty areas include business administration, information communication and technology, land and conservation, horticulture, turf management, electrical, mechanical and more. Consider adding a customised online safety-focused or values-based training program to your induction, take on a new cohort of apprentices or trainees, or provide professional development opportunities like business skills, management and leadership to office-based workers or a library assistant training program.

Our work with state government departments is varied.  Every year we train nurses for departments of health, rangers for departments of parks, workers for emergency services and more.  Short courses, and qualifications support public administration and leadership, information technology and cybersecurity and our customised workforce and community training solutions help statewide upskilling, reskilling, recovery and progress.

Our programs for federal government departments include training and skills advisory services, and design and development of Australia-wide training solutions.  Other programs of interest include short courses, and qualifications support public administration, leadership, information technology, cybersecurity, block chain and more.

How we work with you

As Queensland’s premier public provider of vocational education and training we work with a range of government clients. Regardless of whether you are running a full invitation to offer or request for quote process or a small scale direct buy, or choosing a registered training organisation for your apprentices and trainees, we would love to hear from you.

Examples of our work with government

A customised induction delivered via workshop is putting safety first at Townsville City Council.  The Safe Start program was designed in consultation with the council based on an initial brief. The program focuses on ensuring apprentices start their career with council and keep safety top of mind.

The Volunteers and Events Training Program was designed to help paid and unpaid volunteers and event organisers build event support skills to create and deliver events. The program was designed to help communities recover after a series of natural disasters. The program was designed in consultation with and funded by the Australian Government and Queensland Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. The program was delivered across Queensland online and face-to-face.

The most successful Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and other major events have used vocational education and training to supply training to their workforce. The Head of Workforce for GC2018, Jess Platts said that she knew TAFE Queensland would be the right organisation to provide the training needed – 360,000 hours of training across more than 200 different volunteer roles, delivered to more than 15,000 volunteers.

The Queensland Government, as part of its Youth Justice Strategy, funded the program ‘Transition to Success’ (T2S), which included $1.2 million for a partnership with TAFE Queensland. The fund was established to support young people in the youth justice system to access identified vocational training opportunities.

The Queensland Government is addressing cyber skills shortage at a local level through this unique program delivering cyber security training to public sector staff.

TAFE Queensland students can balance the scales of justice and study to kickstart a career in government.
