Course overview

Start your science career with this entry-level course. There is a strong need for sample collection and laboratory skills across a variety of industries, from mining to food manufacturing and construction to pharmaceutical production. This qualification gives you the foundation-level skills to collect, handle and transport samples.

You will get the practical skills and knowledge to work effectively within a laboratory or field workplace. Learn how to record and store data, perform simple calculations, and present your results. Our highly experienced staff are still strongly embedded in the industry and will give you the one-on-one guidance you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to gather samples required for a variety of industry testing situations. It will also give you the foundation skills necessary to complete further studies in either environmental sciences, health or trades.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Please note: This course is not recommended for Semester 2 enrolment for Year 12 students. Due to the length of the Semester, student results will not be made available in time for QCE.

Selection criteria

You must be in your senior years of high school as well as meet the following criteria:

  • program selection must reflect your SET Plan options
  • academic achievement should support your selection - a pass in Year 10 Maths and English is highly recommended (if you do not have a pass achievement you will require a support plan from the school explaining how they will support you to successfully complete the program)
  • you must be enrolled, have regular attendance and remain in school for the duration of the program.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course.
