Course overview

Increase your career prospects in the floristry industry with this hands-on qualification. This course will give you the skills you need to work as a florist. A new style of florists are driving a renaissance in the Australian flower industry. Internet savvy florists are embracing new technologies including social media to boost their profile and drive business. There are also opportunities for florists to target niche and lucrative markets such as weddings.

This practical course will teach you how to carry out a range of sales and design activities in a floristry studio. You will learn how to sketch your designs, prepare quotes, sell products, and create hand-tied, wired, or base-set bouquets.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to work as a florist in a range of businesses including retail floristry shops, studios, and online floristry businesses.

Selection criteria

Traineeship pathway
To study a traineeship program you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a trainee.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Once study has commenced you will be required to purchase a floristry tool kit (approx. $200). The weekly cost of flowers will be approximately $150.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
