With the electrical services industry one of the largest special construction industries in Australia, there is high demand for qualified workers with over 50,000 job openings over the next five years. As electrical services and technology become more integrated into homes and offices, your specialised skills will be required for installation, maintenance and upgrade.

Gain the skills to interpret electrical drawings, develop circuits, install and maintain electrical components, wiring, equipment, and systems in residential and commercial applications. You will also learn how to install, modify, maintain, and repair instrumentation used in measurement and control systems. Apply your skills and knowledge to measure and control temperature, pressure, and flow and gain skills in instrumentation and programmable logic controller (PLC) control. This qualification fulfils the technical requirements for you to apply for your electrical contractor licence and become a trade-qualified electrician, or trade-qualified electrical instrumentation technician. It encompasses working safely, identifying supply arrangements, following isolation procedures, selecting and using testing and measuring devices, terminating and connecting cables and conductors, safely testing and reporting. The unit coverage excludes disconnecting or reconnecting circuits at a switchboard or to general electrical accessories (including switches, socket outlets, circuit protective devices etc); or installation of, or alteration to, any part of the fixed electrical wiring system (defined as electrical installing work).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, long leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary, a USB, a scientific calculator, and a ruler, set square, protractor and compass.

Need to know

Replacement qualification
These qualifications have been replaced by UEE30820 - Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and UEE31220 - Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control, as of 4 October 2020. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 31 January 2023. If required, enrolments will be transitioned into the replacement qualification/s.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
