Course overview

Add to your existing skill set and learn how to support and improve the quality of life of people living with dementia. This skill set may be useful across a number of industries including community services and health care.

In this skill set you will develop an understanding of dementia, symptoms, types of dementia, behaviours of concern, and suitable activities for mental stimulation. You will also learn how to support people living with dementia, respond effectively, and develop strategies to address their unique needs.

Successful completion of this skill set will give you a foundation for further study and will expand your job prospects in the health and community services sectors.

Entry requirements

Selection criteria

To enrol into this course, you must meet the following entry requirements:

  • hold a qualification at Certificate III level or higher in Community Services, Health or a related field; or
  • have skills and knowledge equivalent to the qualification requirement validated through a recognition of prior learning process
    and
  • work in a care or support role

It is also recommended that you have sound literacy and numeracy skills.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will also require a valid email address, personal stationery (pen and paper), and are required to wear closed-in, non-slip soled shoes when at TAFE.

Placement

You will be required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of industry experience spread across the duration of your study. This may be in the context of paid work, or as a student in a formal vocational placement. 

Vaccination requirements 
Vaccinations may be required by the owner or operator of the facility providing your placement.
These requirements will be provided to the student, prior to arrangements being made for the completion of vocational placement.

Important information

Those students who have a medical contraindication may be unable to complete the vocational placement component of their course. This means you may not be able to meet all of the requirements of your course and may not be able to graduate or receive your qualification.
