Course overview

Break ground on a career in civil construction with this practical course specialising in road construction and maintenance. According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there is stable future growth predicted for earthmoving plant operators including excavator, bulldozer, and grader operators. This large occupation is expected is create around 30,000 jobs over the next five years. 

In this course you'll gain a range of hands-on skills including how to carry out manual excavation, manually spread and compact materials, support plant operations, carry out basic levelling, and repair potholes. You'll also learn how to handle resources and infrastructure materials, safely dispose of nontoxic materials, implement a traffic management plan, drain and dewater civil construction sites, as well as identify, locate and protect underground services. 

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work in the civil construction industry as road construction worker. It will also prepare you for further studies in this area.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

This qualification is available via a Traineeship pathway and is also available for corporate/commercial clients.

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You will require all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) relevant to your workplace for practical activities (subject to on-site requirements).

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
