Course overview

Get your career in the fashion industry up and running through learning the foundations with this dual qualification. You will graduate with a portfolio of work and be qualified to work as a fashion design assistant.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers is expected to grow very strongly and likely to reach over 3,000 job opportunities in the next five years. 

This course will give you the skills you need to draw and interpret basic sketches, modify patterns to create basic styles, identify fibres, fabrics and textiles, and use electronic fashion design tools. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in fashion.

Completion of this course will give you direct entry into our Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and textiles qualification. Graduates will also be able to seek employment as a fashion designer assistant.

Industry-standard facilities

Our custom-built fashion facilities include multiple learning spaces designed to encourage hands-on, collaborative work. Students have access to a lab fitted out with various industrial sewing machines, irons and cutting tables. Pattern making studios and lecture rooms feature both communal tables and individual cubicles where students will have access to the latest digital design software.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You must have completed year 10 or equivalent.
Enrolment Conditions apply for students under 17 years of age.

International students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International.
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software. This equipment and software are available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.
You will also be required to have access to and bring to class some design resources and a sewing kit. Details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation. 

Please note: the purchase of these items may incur additional costs of approximately $100.
It is also recommended that you have access to a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Suite software. This software can be purchased after enrolment to access a student discount price.

All classes are held in simulated work environments, all students must wear closed in shoes during class, at all times.
