Course overview

The role of a crane operator is to lift and shift heavy objects around construction sites, mines, docks, and other work sites.  Learn the skills required to safely operate a slewing mobile crane (a crane with a swinging boom or jib) with a capacity up to 60 tonnes.

Selection criteria

Due to legislation, to be assessed for this qualification, you are also required to be over the age of 18 and that you have sound literacy and numeracy skills.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements as per site requirements.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • leather gloves to AS2161
  • helmet
  • You should also wear high vis industry-standard clothing including long sleeved shirts and pants.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.
