This English-language course is designed for people learning English as an additional language.  It focuses on developing your English-language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These skills will help you with everyday communication and community participation. The course will also help you to progress into further English-language study, training or work.

Selection criteria

Entry to each EAL Course in / certificate must be determined according to the following criteria:

  • a participant’s current English language skills
    (The Listening and Speaking and Reading and Writing units in the Framework may provide the basis for initial assessment processes and placement of participants at the appropriate proficiency level)
    A learner’s suitability should be assessed against a suitable framework such as the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) or the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR)
  • a participant’s prior formal education experience, both overseas and in Australia
  • any prior EAL learning
  • a participant’s learning and pathway needs including employability skills, literacies (digital and other literacies) and further educational and vocational training needs

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
