Course overview

Progress your career with this high-level qualification. This course will give you the skills you need to further your career in a leadership role in the disability sector.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for people working in the community and welfare support in leadership roles is expected to experience stable growth over the next five years. Throughout this course you will be mentored in team leadership and management, discover how to utilise emotional intelligence to maximise team outcomes, and learn how to develop and implement an operational plan to facilitate effective workplace practices. Units specifically relating to the disability sector around managing legal and ethical compliance, providing person-centred services to people with disability and managing a budget within the disability sector will give you the guidance you need to succeed in your studies and progress to the career of your dreams.

Successful completion of this course will give you the specialised skills to manage teams across a range of departments and industry sectors, however, will be specifically focused on the disability sector. You will also get the knowledge you need to undertake further studies in your field.

The VET Student Loans program assists eligible students enrolled in approved courses to pay their tuition fees.  The Australian Government charges full fee-paying (non-subsidised) students a 20 per cent loan fee in addition to their tuition fees.  A VET Student Loan is a debt that must be repaid.

Entry requirements

Selection criteria

It is essential that you have attained:

  • An Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education; or
  • A qualification at AQF 4 or above which was delivered and assessed in English; or
  • A recognised Foundation Studies program; or
  • Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 3 or higher results in Reading and Numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy Test.

You must have had at least six months employment in the disability services sector in a team leader or team coordinator role.
You must have the opportunity to demonstrate skills in the role of a team leader or team coordinator in the disability services sector for practical assessment requirements. 

Resources required

You must have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Placement

You are required to complete 120 hours of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
