Course overview

This skill set will provide you with the units to meet the requirements to obtain a Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) / AAC02 Automotive Air Conditioning Licence.

A Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) is required to work on air conditioning equipment in any of the following category of vehicle;

  • Passenger car;
  • Forward control passenger vehicle;
  • Off-road passenger vehicles;
  • Registrable commercial vehicles;
  • Any off-road vehicle, including tractors and farm machinery fitted with an air conditioning system of a type normally used in the previous category of vehicles;
  • Automotive plant and equipment;
  • Any other self-propelled vehicle, which has a cabin fitted with a type of air conditioner normally fitted to one of the vehicle types previously listed.

Entry requirements

Prerequisite requirements
To enrol in this course, you must be currently working in the automotive industry and hold a relevant qualification.

Please see the Australian Refrigeration Council Fact Sheet for eligible qualifications.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • Clear safety glasses to AS 1336 or 1337
  • Protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Ear plugs or muffs
  • Hair protection - long hair (i.e. hair below collar length) must be restrained (hat, headband, or hair tie) within the workshop environment
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You are also required to have access to and bring:

  • Personal stationery
  • Headphones (recommended)
  • 2GB USB
  • Calculator

Important information

Trainee Refrigerant Handling Licence
You will need to obtain a trainee licence prior to classroom training through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).
