Course overview

Contemporary music careers are made and elevated through effective, structured business practice. This short course focuses on targeted and practical outcomes for emerging original/covers artists in a range of topics frequently gatekept within the music industry. A range of practical guides strategic planning, financial budgeting, and other documents will be provided as useable takeaways.

This short course aimed at emerging acts starting out their career, as well as currently gigging or burgeoning touring artists. You can expect to hear insights about career progression, milestones, and important career business decisions from an experienced musician, internationally touring, with booking agencies and record label representation.

Topics

Music Industry Ecosystem
Understanding key roles in the recording industry across the globe; localising the live music industry; and exploring music networks; positioning yourself as a diverse and multi-skilled musician, developing industry and ensemble recording/performance analysis mindsets.

Business Operation & Infrastructure
Identifying uses, and creation methods, for mailing lists, websites; project management for soloists and groups, delegating roles and responsibilities; communication skills and industry terminology; building teams and identifying good business partners; implementing business structures and partnership agreements; using DSP and social media statistics to benefit your music business.

Marketing & Branding Foundations
Pointing your marketing compass toward appropriate associations and establishing an honest artistic ethos; analysing visual media for promotion in the form of logos, press photos, music videos; writing press releases, artist biographies, where do you go to find networks, digital advertising through social media.

Finance and Revenue Streams
Economic sustainability, recording budgets, live/touring budgets, grants, entertainment bookkeeping, invoicing/expensing, pricing yourself, how much you can expect to make, building a merchandise repertoire sustainably, distributing and calculating royalty payments for physical/digital sales,

Strategising Live, Writing, and Recording
Maintaining and retaining audiences, promoting authentically; self-care and career sustainability, cycles of live and recording and writing; establishing, adapting, and finishing plans; outlining steps for a music release.
