Course overview

This diploma covers both sides of making music: playing it and producing it. You'll develop your instrument or voice, and write and perform your own material and build your theory and aural skills. You'll also record, edit and mix in our studios and run live sound for gigs and events.

Our campus has pro quality recording studios, rehearsal rooms and performance spaces equipped with guitar amplifiers, keyboards, drum kits, PA systems, microphones and industry-standard recording software. Along the way you'll learn the business skills to work as a freelancer in the creative industries, from protecting your work through copyright to looking after your wellbeing.

Our teaching team are professional musicians, producers and engineers, currently engaged in industry with some of Australia’s biggest artists. They'll give you one-on-one guidance on your playing, your recordings and your next steps in the industry.

Australia's music industry is growing. Contemporary music concerts earned $1.8 billion in ticket sales in 2024, up 21.8% on the year before, with 14 million tickets sold (Live Performance Australia). Recorded music grew for a seventh straight year in 2025, to $727 million (ARIA), and APRA AMCOS, which pays songwriters and composers, reported a record $787.9 million in revenue for 2024–25. Musicians who can perform, record and run their own shows can take on a wider range of that work.

Whether you are a performer looking to improve your production skills whilst continuing to develop your live show, or a producer looking to develop musical skills to add to your repertoire, this course will help you develop practical and employable skills in a range of areas.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as a performer, music producer, live sound engineer or studio engineer.

The diploma is the perfect foundation for progression into the Bachelor of Creative Industries (Contemporary Music Practice) offered by TAFE Queensland in partnership with the University of Canberra, and successful completion of the diploma can streamline your higher education pathway with potential direct entry and university credit for your diploma studies.
