Course overview

Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), also known as metal arc inert gas (MIG) welding, is a semi-automatic arc welding process that uses a solid wire electrode, fed by a wire feed unit and protected by a shield gas to produce the weld metal. GMAW is the most commonly used welding process in the industry.

You will learn:

  • the underpinning theory knowledge of MIG welding
  • how to set up equipment correctly and safely
  • how to weld in the down hand position
  • how to make adjustments to the welding process to meet job requirements
  • how to trouble shoot

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Resources required

Work wear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Protective clothing - long cotton drill trousers, and long-sleeved cotton drill shirt
  • Eye protection - must comply with AS1338
  • Hearing protection - must comply with AS1270
  • Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip – must comply with AS2210
  • Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
  • Welding helmets - it is preferred that you provide your own for hygiene reasons and it must comply with AS1338-1
  • Respirator mask (if required) - must comply with AS1716 (P2 rating)
  • Long welding gloves

Students who do not meet these minimum standards of work wear and PPE will not be permitted entry into workshops.
