If you’re interested in getting involved, then you could become a volunteer tutor. As a tutor, you’ll help our AMEP students to improve their English language skills for work, further study, and everyday activities. Sign up today for the chance to make a life-changing difference to your local community.
One of the great perks of volunteering with us is that you don’t need to have previous teaching or tutoring experience to apply. Before commencement, we will provide you with the necessary training, free of charge. Please note that applicants must be legally entitled to work in Australia, aged 18 years or over, and possess a good level of written and spoken English. Additionally, we will require you to complete a successful criminal history check, complete the free tutor training with TAFE Queensland, and commit to the program for a minimum period of six months.
Once you are accepted into the volunteer program, you will receive free training to help you perform your role. The training covers language, literacy and numeracy learning, cultural awareness, and the basic principles of communicative language teaching. Additionally, it will prepare you to tutor students both one-on-one and in a classroom setting. Once you have successfully completed the training, you will receive a statement of participation. While this is not a formal qualification, it will equip you with the necessary skills to tutor our AMEP students.
Our volunteer tutors work with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and age groups. Once your training is complete, you will be carefully matched with a student based on a number of factors including gender, common interests, and location. You can then organise to meet at a time and place that's mutually convenient for yourself and your student. For example, some tutors arrange to meet at their student’s house, or at a public venue during the week, after hours, or on the weekend.
