Shaping the future of payments

TAFE Queensland's part in the national banking change

TAFE Queensland has been recognised as a leader in the payments and banking industries in Australia, being included alongside national organisations such as the Commonwealth Bank and Australian Payments Plus at national conferences and webinars.

Overview

Australia is currently undertaking the most significant transformation of its payments system in more than 50 years, as consumers, businesses and governments increasingly adopt real-time payments.

The move to real-time payments is a once-in-a-generation, whole-of-system change that will impact every organisation, industry and individual across the country.

TAFE Queensland is playing a critical role in this national change program, working in close partnership with the Commonwealth Bank, showcasing real life examples to help organisations understand, demystify and practically navigate the change process, and to identify a clear starting point for their own transformation journey.

The Commonwealth Bank is banking partner for TAFE Queensland for all domestic payments.

Australian Payments Plus operates Australia's domestic payments infrastructure - including the eftpos debit network, BPAY bill payments, and the NPP (the country's real-time payments system) - along with ConnectID, a safe and secure way for Australians to verify their identity. The NPP facilitates around $7 billion payments each day moving quickly and securely between bank accounts using Osko, PayID and PayTo®.

Opportunity

The transition to real-time payments via the NPP represents a complex, multi-year transformation that reaches far beyond technology, requiring coordinated change across people, processes, systems and customer experience.

The Commonwealth Bank uses TAFE Queensland's business cases and real-world operational challenges to help other government agencies and large organisations understand what successful implementation looks like in practice - from identifying impacts, to planning and delivering a successful rollout.

Through national webinars, industry roundtables and major conferences, TAFE Queensland and the Commonwealth Bank have jointly supported and reassured a significant number of organisations, providing practical insights and establishing strong foundations to meet the tight national change timeframes ahead.

By partnering with Australian Payments Plus - including participation in industry forums and presentations at the annual national conference at the International Convention Centre Sydney - TAFE Queensland is actively supporting Australia's broader education and engagement strategy to drive the move to real-time payments.

Solution

TAFE Queensland's Accounts Receivable and Banking Manager Paul Burgess said the partnership enables the exploration of how modern payments and the NPP are reshaping experiences for organisations and the people they serve.

Paul said a clear theme from the panel discussions was that payments modernisation is no longer just about speed. It is about creating simpler, more transparent and more resilient payment experiences end to end.

"With PayTo®, the agreement process became simpler and more transparent. Students can manage their payment arrangements with greater visibility, which has improved communication and reduced missed payments," Paul said

"The key insight from the discussion was clear. Start with a defined use case, bring people and process leaders into the conversation early, then take a phased approach that allows organisations to test, learn and scale with confidence".

Results

Through PayTo®, TAFE Queensland is demonstrating how real-time, account-to-account payments can elevate customer experience while enabling teams to focus on higher-value interactions, rather than manual processes.

Future plans

There is growing interest from other government agencies and departments for TAFE Queensland to present its experience through national and state-based government forums and roundtables, further supporting the acceptance and adoption of the New Payments Platform across the public sector.
