Greatness has no limits

At TAFE Queensland, we believe anyone can make great happen and we're committed to helping everyone, everywhere define their greatness.

What is greatness?

For some people it's pursuing a passion, for others its being their own boss; greatness is different to everyone.

For Mckaylah Drake, she defines her greatness by doing what makes her feel proud.

After suffering the loss of a child, Mckaylah decided to pursue a career in nursing and use her personal experience to support and care for other families.

"I define my greatness by being a nursing student and I'm so proud of myself for finally leaping into the journey," she said.

"When I graduate and I am a nurse, I'm going to be so proud and hopefully make my kids proud, and make a change for other mums who are in my situation as well."

Then there's tradie and family man Ben Jones, who completed an electrical apprenticeship through TAFE Queensland and went on to start his own business, Expert Electrical.

"I define greatness as doing something you're passionate about, doing something that is rewarding overall, rather than saying it's just a job," he said.

"I like the fact that I'm contributing to the fight against climate change, I'm contributing to upskilling people, and I'm contributing to a better future for my kids as well."

Those people he's upskilling are apprentices Ben sends to TAFE Queensland to get the same level of quality training he himself received.

For busy mum-of-three Divina Irvin, defining her greatness means stepping outside of her comfort zone and returning to studying more than two decades after leaving high school.

“I have been busy caring for my children, but now that they are getting older, I decided it's time for me to start looking for a job in administration," Divina said.

"I've been out of school for 22 years and now I'm studying again, doing a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420). If I can do it, you can do it."

And Aden Cornell-Carse defines his greatness by embracing opportunity.

Aden is studying at TAFE Queensland to build practical cyber security skills, after originally pursuing a very different path in international relations.

"Greatness to me means opportunity. This course has linked me in with companies in the local area — opportunity has been a key part of that and it's really delivered," Aden said.

"I think for any person who's getting started, having the opportunity to try different things and start working in that area is what greatness is."
