Detailed ceremony proceedings
In order to attend a Graduation ceremony you must be eligible to graduate. That means you need to have completed all the requirements of your course including all units, assessments and exams.
Invitations to attend Graduation will only be sent to eligible students. If you are expecting to graduate and haven't received a Graduation email, please contact your local faculty administration team.
Finishing your course doesn't mean you're automatically registered to attend a Graduation ceremony. If you would like to attend a ceremony you must register.
Eligible students will receive an email with all the relevant Graduation details, as well as information on how to register, once they have completed their studies. There may be guest limits depending on the capacity of your ceremony.
Graduating Student Ticket $65
Guest Ticket $25
Your ticket includes the cost of gowning and may also include entertainment such as live music, photo booths, and catering before your ceremony.
Guests are required to purchase tickets to attend the ceremony.
If course fees are not fully paid, students will be ineligible to attend the Graduation ceremony and the formal qualification will be sent to the student after all outstanding fees are paid in full. Individual circumstances will be considered when determining eligibility.
All appeals must be lodged before registration closes to be eligible for Graduation. You need to do this directly with your faculty administration team. Once a response is received, the Graduation team will be notified to proceed with your registration.
You must always keep your contact information up to date with TAFE Queensland. Please log in to the Student Portal and ensure your contact details are correct. If you are unable to access the portal please call 1300 308 233.
If you miss being invited to Graduation because your details were not up-to-date, and the registration period has closed, you will be unable to attend.
Refunds after registration closes will only be given in extenuating circumstances. Each claim will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and require supporting documentation such as a medical certificate. Approval of all refunds is at the discretion of TAFE Queensland.
Refund queries are to be sent to graduations.brisbane@tafeqld.edu.au for assessment.
When you register for your Graduation ceremony you will be told what time to arrive at the venue. This is to allow time for registration, gowning, and your student briefing where you'll find out what to do during the ceremony and where you'll be seated. If you arrive late you may not be able to join the Graduation ceremony.
Before the ceremony is due to begin, you need to attend a compulsory student briefing. You may notice a stampede of other students heading in a particular direction, and that's usually a good indicator of where to go. If you're not sure, just ask a staff member.
During the briefing, we’ll explain how the celebration works and what you can expect. Please don’t wander off after the briefing!
During the ceremony graduating students will sit separately from their guests. Students will generally be seated close to the stage and are grouped by study area or faculty, course, and qualification level. Join your friends and family to celebrate after the end of the Graduation ceremony.
Graduation is an exciting time. Out of respect to your fellow graduands, we ask that all students stay in their allocated seat throughout the ceremony. If you move to sit with your friends or family, or try to leave the venue, you will be asked to return to your allocated seat. There will be plenty of time to celebrate after the ceremony.
Graduation is an important life event you'll want to remember in years to come. Professional photographers will be available to capture the special moment with your friends and family, including an onsite studio session for $85 pre-purchased (or $150 on the day). This is another reason to make sure you arrive with plenty of time. Roving photographers may also cover each event.
Remember to celebrate your time at TAFE Queensland with some of our memorabilia. A merchandise stand is available before graduation ceremonies for you to purchase a memento to cherish your day. You can pre-order your merchandise when you buy your Graduation tickets to ensure you don't miss out.
Venue details
Your ceremony will be taking place at TAFE Queensland South Bank. The venue is readily accessible by bus, ferry, train or car. Check the TransLink website for the most direct route if you choose public transport. If you decide to drive, we recommend parking in one of the local carparks at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre or the South Bank Parklands.
We offer all graduands and guests equal access to a Graduation ceremony. If you or your guests have special accessibility requirements, please email graduations.brisbane@tafeqld.edu.au to let us know.
What happens on Graduation day?
You will confirm your arrival at the registration area and be provided with important event information. It can be amended on the spot if anything is incorrect (like your name or qualification).
It is here that you will be given your seating allocation card (the WHITE card). Do not lose your white card! You should have it with you at all times. Not only does it tell you your seating allocation, but it is an important part of the ceremony running smoothly as it contains information on your stage announcement order. You need it. Like, REALLY need it.
After registration, you’ll be directed to the gowning area (look for a helpful staff member if you're unsure where to go). This is where you get the academic regalia you need, such as your fancy schmancy grad gown and mortarboard. You'll be kitted out in different combinations and coloured sashes depending on your qualification and level. You will now look like a graduand!
The gowning attire is on a hire basis only. You will get to keep your black mortarboard (graduation cap) as a memento, but all other rented items must be returned, or you will be charged a fee. The gown return is located directly outside the auditorium when you are leaving.
We encourage graduates to celebrate cultural heritage by wearing traditional attire. We encourage wearing Korowai Maori cloaks, Islander Ula Loles (candy leis), Burqas, Hijabs, Niqabs, Chadors and Khimars. If any inappropriate attire (i.e. anything without a cultural heritage) is worn (as deemed by TAFE Queensland staff), you will not be able to walk across the stage. E.g. no cowboy hats.
Whilst you are being gowned, your guests will be welcomed to wait for you in the 66 on Ernest Restaurant. Inside, you will find nibbles and drinks, live entertainment and a free photobooth.
It's now time to spend some time with your guests and, if you like, head upstairs with them for your professional photoshoot.
Belongings
This is important: Once you enter the Auditorium, you most likely won’t see your family again until after the ceremony. So give them all hugs, hand over your purse/coat/handbag/graduation bear and send them off to entertain themselves. There will also be a cloakroom available.
Why? You shouldn't carry bags etc. on stage, and you might not go back to the same seat after you’ve walked across the stage.
Photography
An early bird pre-order special is available for your entire image set. This includes studio-style shots and images of crossing the stage, all for only $85 pre-purchased (it's $150 on the day). Order this when purchasing your student ticket to guarantee this price.
The package includes your studio photos with you and your family and your on-stage photos when receiving your award. All your digital images are sent to you in high resolution and are shot by highly trained, experienced photographers. Please note that images are digital copies and are not printed as part of the digital images package. Print upgrades are available on the day.
If you miss out on photography before the ceremony, never fear - the photographers will also be available after the ceremony.
If you did not purchase a photo package, rest assured that you can still get your stage images. Once all photos are processed, we will share the image galleries with all registered graduates via email. From this website, you can purchase your stage images direct through our photography partner. Please note that all images are supplied as digital files; you will not receive printed copies.
Merchandise
If you have pre-purchased TAFE Queensland Graduation merchandise, this will be available to pick up before your ceremony from our merchandise desk. A limited amount will be available on the day.
While all this is happening, you'll also need to sit in line according to the white card you received while gowning (see, we told you it was necessary). According to this number, you walk in, sit, and walk across the stage.
You will need to be seated in your assigned seat one (1) hour before the ceremony commences so you can be briefed on the ceremony procedures. It’s essential to sit in your allocated seat as this is the order in which your name is read out.
An average Graduation ceremony takes around 90 minutes and involves the following:
The academic procession enters the Auditorium, and the assembly stands
- Acknowledgement of Country
- Welcome to graduands and guests
- Official conferral of awards
- Student/guest speaker
- Conclusion of the ceremony
- The academic procession retires, and the assembly stands
Walking across the stage
Walking across the stage is your moment to shine during the ceremony. Our friendly ushers will guide you through the process on the day, so there is no need to worry if you forget a step.
Your row will be escorted to the foot of the stage, where you’ll wait in line and hand the usher your name card.
Once it’s time, you’ll hear your name called and start walking across the stage.
As you walk, you doff your cap to your Director of Faculty next to the lectern.
You then proceed to the other side of the stage, where you will shake hands (or elbow bump) with the General Manager; he will present you with a congratulatory scroll and will face you to take a photo to commemorate the moment.
This is the part of the ceremony where your family and friends cheer as loud as possible and applaud you on your major accomplishment.
Once you leave the stage, our ushers will guide you back to the seats.
Graduation Etiquette
As a courtesy to our graduates and the esteemed academia, please remain in your seat for the duration of the ceremony.
