School Holiday Workshops 2026

Thinking about future study but not sure what you want to do? Or just looking for something fun to do during the school holidays? TAFE Queensland is hosting a series of workshops to give high school students a taste of what TAFE Queensland has to offer.

Thinking about what to do in Years 11 and 12 or after high school or just want something different to do in the holidays? TAFE Queensland School Holiday Workshops let you try a study area in a real campus environment, with hands-on sessions led by industry-experienced teachers.

Plan your week

On the day, it is important that all students wear enclosed shoes for the workshops.
They also need to bring their own packed meals, a water bottle, a notebook and a pen, along with personal health items such as medication or EpiPens. 

Art, Design and Music

Analogue zine making
Wednesday 8 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11

Create an analogue zine using graphic design as a storytelling tool. Students explore sequencing and DIY publishing while learning about the history of youth, music, and subculture.

Requirements - a device to save your work, such as a USB or SSD drive.
 

Film making from script to screen
Tuesday 7 July | Mt Gravatt
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12 

Break down a script into scenes and production roles before rehearsing in a multicamera television studio. Students shoot a short film using professional studio techniques and experience the full filmmaking process from planning to production.

Requirements - all students must bring a completed media release form to receive a copy of the workshop outcome. These will be provided once a booking is complete.

Turn it up! Live sound workshop
Wednesday 8 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Gain a basic understanding of how a small band PA system works. Students take part in practical demonstrations and learn how to operate a digital mixing console.

Experimental drawing with the University of Canberra
Thursday 9 July | South Bank
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 11; Year 12

This workshop develops students’ observational drawing skills through experimental approaches such as contour, blind contour, extended-tool drawing, and the use of the non-dominant hand with graphite. 
 

Character drawing and design
Tuesday 7 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11

Draw original characters from imagination while developing a personal drawing style. Students explore different techniques, build a mini character design portfolio, and discover careers in animation and illustration.

SFX and cinematic gore with Huxley School of Makeup 
Wednesday 8 July | Mt Gravatt
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Deep bruises, fresh scars, and realistic blood textures used on professional movie sets. Learn how these industry techniques are created to achieve convincing, on-screen effects. 

Requirements - long hair must be pulled back.

Rock band boot camp
Wednesday 8 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Take part in a full‑day music workshop focused on ensemble performance, stagecraft, and collaboration. Students rehearse contemporary repertoire in small bands and finish with a live performance on the Gig Studio stage.

Requirements - this workshop is for musicians and singers. You will be asked what you play/sing when purchasing a ticket. A limit of students applies to each. Bring your instrument/strap/lead/drumsticks on the day.
 

Design and sew a crossbody pouch
Wednesday 8 July | Mt Gravatt
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 11; Year 12

Learn industry techniques to design and create a crossbody pouch. Students complete a fashion specification sheet, cut and produce a finished product using professional methods.

Requirements - long hair must be pulled back, a sewing kit (optional)

Photo and video for content creation
Tuesday 7 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Learn how to create professional product photos for e‑commerce, focusing on lighting, composition, and visual branding. Students also shoot and edit short product videos suitable for online stores and social media.

Requirements - a device to save your work, such as a USB or SSD drive. a camera (DSLR preferred) with SD card, a video device (camera or phone), and a laptop (optional).

3D engineering design and interior visualisation
Wednesday 8 July | South Bank or Thursday 9 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Students explore engineering visualisation through 3D modelling before learning interior design principles such as colour theory and spatial styling. Technical and creative skills come together as students digitally design and present an interior space.

Business, Justice and Study Skills

Budgeting for real life with Excel
Monday 6 July | South Bank
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Create a personal budget using spreadsheets. Students track income and expenses, forecast savings goals, automate calculations, and build financial skills for life after school.

Requirements - a laptop is encouraged but not compulsory.

Referencing for school assignments
Wednesday 8 July | South Bank
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Learn how to research effectively for school projects. Students find reliable sources, use databases, format references in APA 7 style, avoid plagiarism, and improve academic writing skills.

Introduction to law and justice

Work through a practical criminal law scenario by completing paperwork to charge an offender. Students engage in guided discussions about ethics, responsibility, and decision‑making within the justice system.

Team building escape room challenge
Monday 6 July | South Bank, or Wednesday 8 July | South Bank
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11

Put problem‑solving skills to the test in this high‑energy escape‑room style workshop. Students work in teams to crack codes, solve puzzles, and race against the clock while building creativity and collaboration skills.

Cooking, Hospitality and Tourism

Café and barista skills
Tuesday 7 July | South Bank or Thursday 9 July | Loganlea
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Learn how to prepare café‑style drinks using real barista equipment. Students practise milk steaming and latte art, explore café workflow and customer service, and build skills for entry‑level hospitality roles.

Requirements - students are required to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt, and long hair must be pulled back.

Mocktail and beverage skills
Thursday 9 July | South Bank
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Learn how to create a variety of non‑alcoholic drinks and mocktails. Students practise cocktail‑making techniques, explore flavour profiles, and learn about bar workflow, hygiene, and customer service.

Cook like a chef

9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Develop essential culinary skills using fresh ingredients. Students learn core techniques, present a finished dish, and enjoy the results of their cooking.

Exploring travel and tourism

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Explore travel and tourism through interactive activities. Students design travel brochures and content, learn what makes a great trip, and discover careers in the tourism industry.

Discover some of the mystique around baking and have some fun. You will make something savoury and something sweet to eat.

Barbering skills basics

Explore healthy hair care, scalp condition, and professional presentation. Students practise blow‑drying, curling, straightening, and basic barbering techniques while learning how to safely use and maintain tools.

Learn the principles of eyebrow mapping through foundational theory and guided practice. Students explore symmetry, proportion, and makeup techniques to create balanced, professional results.

Horticulture

Cultivate your plant propagation skills

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Grow plants from seeds and cuttings while learning horticulture tools and techniques. Students explore plant biology, growth cycles, and careers in gardening, landscaping, nurseries, and conservation.

Looking after a sportsfield grade lawn

Prepare and maintain turf surfaces used for football and golf. Students use tools and equipment, play mini sports games, and explore careers in turf management and groundskeeping.

Build a static website

Build and program a simple robot using sensors, circuits, and basic Python coding. Students explore how robots are used in industry and discover pathways in automation, cyber security, and engineering.

Child development through play

Education support escape room challenge

Work in teams to crack clues and solve challenges while discovering the role of a Teacher Aide. Students gain behind‑the‑scenes insight into supporting learning, managing behaviour, and working in schools.

Sport and Recreation

Fitness testing and training fundamentals
Monday 6 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Practise fitness testing, analyse performance, and design training programs. Students gain hands‑on exercise skills and explore pathways into fitness, coaching, and sport industries.

Requirements - running shoes, a towel, gym clothes and a change of clothes. 

Introduction to boating and marine skills
Monday 6 July | Alexandra Hills Boat Shed
9am - 1pm

Eligible years: Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Learn the basics of boating and life on the water. Students explore navigation, tides, and weather, practise safe boat operation, respond to on‑water emergencies, and discover maritime career pathways.

This workshops is subject to suitable Moreton Bay wind and weather conditions. Students will be contacted no later than 12pm on Sunday 5 July if weather restrictions in place require this workshop to be cancelled. If the workshop is cancelled by TAFE Queensland, a refund will be offered.

Requirements - a long sleeve shirt, a hat and sunscreen. Prepare to get wet.

 

Inside the game with the Academy of Sport
Tuesday 7 July | South Bank
9am - 4pm

Eligible years: Year 9; Year 10; Year 11; Year 12

Choose your team and take a behind‑the‑scenes look at the sport industry through club insights, leadership activities, and hands‑on coaching. Students explore clear pathways into TAFE Queensland sport programs.
Choose between:

  • Brisbane Heat
  • Brisbane Lions

Requirements - activewear, running shoes, a hat and sunscreen.

What happens on the day?

On the day

  • Meet at the marquee in the centre of the campus at 8.45am, 15 minutes before your workshop starts. Your teacher will collect you from there.
  • Bring along your QR Code to make check-in easy.

What to bring

  • Don’t forget your packed lunches, snacks and your water bottle. You will get a break for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea but you won’t be allowed off campus to buy any meals.
  • All other items as prescribed in the workshop information.
  • Any personal health items you need (e.g., asthma puffer, EpiPen).

What to wear

  • Please wear comfortable casual clothes. You do not need to wear your school uniform.
  • Some workshops may detail specific requirements, such as long pants or running shoes. 
  • You must wear enclosed shoes.
  • Be respectful with your clothing. No swear words, or inappropriate slogans. (If your clothing is considered offensive to others you may be asked to leave.)

What if I am sick or running late?

  • If you’re sick or can’t make it, call the TAFE Queensland events team on 0436 411 230.
  • If you’re more than 30 minutes late, we’ll contact your parent/guardian.

If you can’t attend / refunds
