TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries is funding more than $3 million in applied research projects to innovate clean energy and battery workforce training.

Register now to attend the Centre's Applied Research Grants National Showcase on Tuesday 24 November 2026 from 1pm to 2:30pm. By filling in the registration form, you'll receive an email with the showcase link.

During the showcase you'll hear perspectives from TAFE, university, industry and community-led projects and learn how research is being translated into practical training, skills and workforce solutions.

What's planned

Andrew Williamson, Executive Lead of the National TAFE Network, will open the showcase with a high-level perspective on the state of applied research within TAFE across Australia.

You’ll then hear directly from four Applied Research Grant recipients as they share their projects and emerging findings, followed by an opportunity to put your questions to the presenters.

Featured research

Battery end-of-life management and emerging battery technologies

Professor Joshua Watts, Director of the Energy Storage Research Group at Queensland University of Technology, will showcase QUT’s research into best practice and workforce training requirements for battery end-of-life management. QUT is also a Round 2 grant recipient, working with industry partners to build on outcomes from round 1 to develop practical training resources and a skills framework for redox flow battery installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Clean energy and battery workforce pathways for Australia's resources sector

Taryn Hughes, Director, Commercial Business at TAFE Queensland, will showcase work exploring pathways into emerging occupations for battery and clean energy technologies in Australia’s resources sector. This research is helping identify and validate workforce pathways for the transition to battery-electric technologies in mining.

PoweringUp Yarrabah

Bradley Clair, Chief Executive Officer of PowerWells Foundation, will present PoweringUp Yarrabah, which combines access to solar and battery technology with foundational vocational training and workforce pathways for First Nations residents in Yarrabah.

Preparing Australia's workforce for battery decommissioning

Glenn Dahlenburg from GCD Advisory will showcase Workforce Ready Battery Decommissioning, a project examining workforce and skills gaps associated with battery decommissioning and developing an industry-led training roadmap to support safety across the battery lifecycle.
