Qualified and confident – Martha cleans up with TAFE Queensland

Under the guidance of TAFE Queensland teachers, students receive recognition for the skills they have gained in the workplace. Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), students can fast-track their studies using the skills and knowledge gained at work and only need to undertake training and assessment for the remaining units to meet the requirements for a formal qualification.

Recent graduate Martha Will, who works at Highlands Kindy & Early Learning in Toowoomba, built specialist school cleaning skills and knowledge under the guidance of TAFE's teachers.

"The course built my skills, taught me more about cleaning, and the teachers made it easy for me to learn." says Martha.

During the course, Martha learnt various cleaning techniques, the latest industry practices for preparing and cleaning classrooms safely and infection control, while also learning about hazard identification and minimisation.

"I learned that if there is any hazard in the area, how to control it, move it and keep the area safe and clean. It's crucial in my role, as I'm responsible for mopping, wiping tables and doors, cleaning the toilets, and dusting to ensure everything in the class is right for the young students."

"I found the course very interesting, and every day I learnt something helpful to my job – particularly how to deal with clients."

Now a graduate, Martha is proud to be formally recognised with a qualification and thanks to her time at TAFE Queensland, has the confidence to study more in the future.

Students studying the Certificate III in Cleaning Operations (CPP30321) come from diverse cultures and backgrounds, where English is often their second or third language and have limited access to or no post-school education and limited to no digital literacy.
