TAFE Queensland immortalised as a Monopoly property
After months of anticipation and voting, Cairns residents have experienced the big reveal of their very own Monopoly board featuring local landmarks—including TAFE Queensland's Great Barrier Reef International Marine College campus.
Over the last few months, thousands of locals across the Cairns region have placed their votes for the landmark locations they want to see on their edition of the world's most popular board game. After thoughtfully selecting the town’s most prized hotspots they feel best represent the area, the final custom themed squares and cards have been announced.
Featuring as a green property alongside local schools, TAFE Queensland is excited and humbled to be showcased with so many other community icons.
"We have a history of serving Queensland's communities for more than 140 years now, and I hope to see us part of the Cairns community for many more to come too," said Susan Kinobe, General Manager, North region, TAFE Queensland.
"Our Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) specifically offers a comprehensive range of training qualifications and certificates for the maritime industry, delivered by industry-experienced trainers in specialised training facilities, and it's just fantastic that it's been selected."
"No other training provider can match us for scale or experience in the state, and I'm incredibly proud that that this first for TAFE Queensland has happened in the Monopoly: Cairns edition."
Mayor of Cairns Bob Manning added that it is fantastic to see Cairns immortalised by the game that's been around since 1935 and reproduced in over 47 different languages.
“Not every city gets the chance to have its own edition, but as the capital of Far North Queensland and the gateway to two of the world’s great natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest – it seems only appropriate that we have now been included in the Monopoly family,” said Cr Manning.
“This newest edition featuring Cairns, captures the diversity and beauty that the region offers. From the iconic Esplanade Lagoon to the Reef, there’s also a selection of local beaches included on the board, as well as shopping centres, eateries, schools and of course visitor hotspots.”
Jaime-lee de Niet, representative from Winning Moves – the makers of custom Monopoly Boards – concluded with her delight that Monopoly had finally come to Cairns.
“As a Queenslander born and bred ... I am overjoyed to finally, after many years of anticipation, bring Cairns its very own iconic edition of Monopoly!”
The new Monopoly: Cairns edition is available now online and at all major retailers in the Cairns area and participating businesses such as: Big W, JB HiFi, QBD, Toy World and The Bay Tree (Smithfield Shopping Centre).
