Gator project shifts into high gear for TAFE Queensland and community

Queensland-based natural gas company, Arrow Energy, generously donated three John Deere Gators to the Darling Downs community, and they asked TAFE Queensland to help get them road ready.

Arrow’s Logistics, Transportation & Warehouse Manager, Travis Kearsley, reached out with the unique opportunity for TAFE Queensland RDO John Deere apprentices undertaking the Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology (AUR30420).

Our apprentices were quick to accept the challenge.

Using the dedicated John Deere apprentice block delivery, the apprentices worked on the Gators, learning how to inspect, service and overhaul the vehicles using official John Deere service and maintenance systems.

TAFE Queensland educators, with John Deere specific training, deliver tailored block training sessions that give apprentices practical, industry-relevant experience. Each year, they run approximately 17 two-week blocks designed specifically for John Deere apprentices: equipping them with the hands-on skills they need to succeed.

What the apprentices achieved:

  • Completed a major service, including oil and air filter changes and valve set.
  • Machined brake discs and replaced brake pads.
  • Replaced wheel bearings.
  • Inspected and greased CV joints, trailing arms and gearbox.
  • Tested batteries and adjusted shock absorbers.
  • Conducted a full operational and safety test.

Following successful completion of the servicing work, it was agreed that two of the Gators would find new homes at community groups in the Darling Downs, while one would remain at the TAFE Queensland Dalby campus to support ongoing apprentice training.

The project is a great example of how TAFE Queensland’s strong industry partnerships create meaningful learning experiences for students, while delivering real benefits to the community.

It’s a win for everyone involved, TAFE Queensland and our local apprentices, RDO Equipment, Arrow Energy, and local regional communities.
