Awarded ‘Jack’ of many trades

For Jack Kemp, Administrative Officer in the facilities and infrastructure team at TAFE Queensland, variety is the highlight of his work. From assisting the fleet management and workplace health and safety teams, to print services and asset management, Jack’s responsibilities span multiple areas across the Toowoomba campus where he is based.

Jack’s role sees him interacting with staff from all corners of the organisation – and that’s exactly what he enjoys most.

“I call myself a ‘Jack of all trades’,” laughed Jack – a proud Wiradjuri man, at his apt self-description.

“I do a lot of work around the campus, but I also support a few teams, so no two days are ever the same for me.”

“I really enjoy the variety, and the chance to talk with people as I move about,” he shared.

Jack first joined TAFE Queensland two years ago as a trainee and completed a Certificate III in Business (BSB30120) qualification. He was part of TAFE Queensland’s inaugural First Nations Traineeship Program in the Darling Downs and South West region — supporting the organisation’s First Nations Employment Strategy.

Jack’s traineeship has taken him through a variety of teams — starting in customer service, moving into student services, then spending six months in the print room before stepping into his current administrative position with the facilities and infrastructure team.

“The traineeship was a great introduction,” Jack explained.

“It was four days working on campus and one day each week studying. A lot of what I learned – especially the business etiquette and systems knowledge – l use every day.”

Jack’s etiquette no doubt contributed to his recent award – ‘NAIDOC Trainee/Apprentice of the Year’, which he won at the Toowoomba NAIDOC Gala Dinner on July 5.

“I had no idea I’d even been nominated – I only found out a few days before the presentation,” Jack beamed.

“Then to actually win on the night, in front of so many people, was just awesome.”

“It was nerve-wracking getting up on stage, but it’s been a boost. So many people have congratulated me, and it’s something I’ll always be proud of,” he said.

Jack describes TAFE Queensland as a supportive and professional workplace.

“I think the culture here is amazing. Everyone is mature and professional – there’s no drama – everyone’s friendly and approachable,” Jack shared.

“I really enjoy moving around the campus and talking to different people – it makes the workday even better,” Jack explained.

When asked why he’s proud to work at TAFE Queensland, Jack didn’t miss a beat.

“It’s a great place to work, with great pay and support. I feel like the work I do makes a difference and helps people. And I can see myself grow here over time,” he offered.

Inspired by colleagues who have built long-term careers at TAFE Queensland, Jack hopes to follow in their footsteps.

“I wouldn’t mind being like Michael Quinn (Manager, Customer Experience and inspiration for Jack), who’s spent his whole career here. Everyone’s so great to work with, and I enjoy what I do.”

“I’d be proud to stay at TAFE Queensland for the long run,” Jack finished.
