From maple leaves to tropical dreams
For Canadian student Louis Gaiten, studying nursing abroad wasn’t just about earning a qualification. It was about experiencing life in a new country while learning from some of the best in the field.
Today, Louis is completing his Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at TAFE Queensland in Cairns, and he says the experience has been nothing short of transformative.
“In Canada, the equivalent qualification usually takes two years,” Louis explained.
“Here at TAFE Queensland, the course runs for 18 months, which means I can complete my studies faster and enjoy living in Australia at the same time.”
Louis was drawn to TAFE Queensland’s practical, hands-on approach to training.
“The course is really geared towards the technical aspects of the job, and that’s exactly what I was looking for,” he said.
“The teachers are amazing, some are retired professionals with years of experience, and others are still working in the field today. That balance means you’re not only learning from their extensive knowledge but also staying up to date with current industry practices.”
Beyond the classroom, Louis has embraced everything Cairns has to offer. From white beautiful beaches like Trinity beach to lush sugar cane fields and tropical fruit wineries, he says the region is unlike anywhere else in the world.
“It’s a place where you can explore so much diversity in such a short drive – from the ocean to the farmlands,” he said.
One of the highlights for Louis has been the cultural experiences available in far north Queensland.
“If you get the chance to connect with local communities, it’s incredible,” he reflected.
“Experiencing indigenous culture and, if you’re really lucky, visiting the Torres Strait Islands - that’s something you’ll never forget.”
For Louis, choosing TAFE Queensland was about more than just studying, it was about building skills, exploring new cultures, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
“It’s absolutely worth it,” he said with a smile.
