Growing the game: from the school yard to a hockey coaching career
Thanks to the support of Macquarie Sports, Hockey Queensland recently delivered two free hockey clinics to schools in the Logan and Maryborough regions - giving more than 450 children the chance to experience hockey for the very first time.
But this time, it wasn’t just elite athletes leading the way. TAFE Queensland students enrolled in the Hockey Queensland Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) program stepped up to play a key role in delivering the sessions, putting their new skills into practice in a real coaching environment.
Over two action-packed hours, students guided primary school children through the basics of the game - teaching them how to hold the stick, move the ball, and build confidence through a series of fun mini-games.
Their involvement showcased the practical, hands-on nature of the course, which blends classroom learning with real-world coaching experiences through the Hockey Queensland network.
The sessions wrapped up with a lively Q&A featuring some of the sport’s biggest names, including Olympic Gold Medallist and current Women’s Blaze Head Coach Angie Lambert OAM, alongside rising stars Meka Crick, Hannah Cullum-Sanders, Oliver Harding, Maddy Kenny, and Ryan Wilcox. Each child walked away with a hockey stick, ball, bucket hat, and a Way to Play Beginners Guide to help them continue their hockey journey.
“It was fantastic to see our TAFE Queensland students out there leading activities and inspiring the next generation,” said Angie Lambert OAM. “These kinds of opportunities give them real coaching experience while helping to grow the game at the grassroots.”
