Lions roar to back-to-back Premiership glory as students experience history first-hand
The Brisbane Lions have cemented their place in AFL history, claiming their second consecutive premiership with a dominant 47-point win over Geelong in the 2025 Grand Final.
The victory not only thrilled fans across Queensland but also highlighted the strength of the club’s high-performance culture, leadership, and strategic vision.
For students enrolled in TAFE Queensland’s Brisbane Lions Dual Diploma program, the win carried special significance. Around 50 students are currently studying through the partnership, gaining unique insights into the inner workings of one of the AFL’s most successful organisations during a historic season.
Beyond the scoreboard
While the result on the field was emphatic, TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport Manager Don Harley said the Lions’ back-to-back success also speaks to the structures and systems behind the scenes.
“In sport - just like in business - success is built on more than just raw talent. It’s about planning, understanding operations, communicating clearly, managing people, and navigating change,” he said.
“The Brisbane Lions’ achievement is a clear demonstration of what a high-performance culture can deliver. By embedding our education directly into professional sporting organisations, we’re helping students build the skills and experiences needed to turn their passion into a career.”

Immersive education at an elite club
The dual award offering, featuring a Diploma of Sport (SIS50321) and Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420), is delivered two days per week at the Lions’ Brighton Homes Arena facilities.
Students also undertake up to 100 hours of work-integrated learning across areas such as commercial operations, media, events, marketing, and administration, working alongside professionals who contribute to the club’s success.
This combination of classroom learning and real-world experience provides students with a strong foundation to pursue roles in the sports industry, including:
- Sports operations coordination
- Community development
- Event or project management
- Club administration and marketing
Graduates may also receive credit toward further university studies in sport management, business, or related fields.
A premiership moment as inspiration
The Lions’ victory is a reminder that premierships are built not just by players and coaches, but by a broad ecosystem of people working behind the scenes - from strategists and operations staff to commercial teams and marketers.
For students, being part of this environment during such a significant period offers a powerful learning experience and a tangible view of where their studies can lead.
Let the Lions’ victory be more than a celebration - let it be your spark to join the next wave of sports leaders.
