Luke Thrives in the Film Industry with Hands-On Experience

Graduating with the Diploma of Screen and Media (CUA51020) in 2021, Luke has been applying the skills and knowledge he gained from TAFE Queensland, as an Art Department Runner with Paramount+.

Every day, he plays a crucial role in supporting the art department on film and television productions, helping ensure they are completed on time.

“I choose to study screen and media because it offers great career options. I always wanted to work on production sets with creative themes such as action, adventure, and comedy movies, and thanks to TAFE I’m doing it,” Luke said.

During his time at TAFE Queensland, Luke had the chance to star in the ‘Character Selector’ social media campaign, giving him a unique perspective on both sides of the camera.

“I enjoy acting and learning from an experienced crew. I witnessed how key grips, camera operators, makeup artists, wardrobe staff, directors, and producers collaborated during filming,” he said.

“It was an amazing experience to be part of that process and gain such valuable insights.”

Luke appreciates the practical experiences TAFE Queensland offers, which are crucial in the film industry.

“My role requires me to be adaptable, reliable, and understand the production process well – all skills I learnt during my studies.”

His experience in his studies taught him how to make short films while gaining invaluable insights into working on a film set.

Since completing his diploma, Luke has been ready to hit the ground running, leveraging his skills and experience to secure roles in the industry.

“I acquired skills in camera operation, producing, gaffer work, directing, art direction, and makeup. I’m now working 50 hours a week in an industry I love, mastering these disciplines, and I feel confident in my ability to work in any of these areas.”

His teachers from the film and television industry provide real-world knowledge that prepares students for their careers.

“TAFE Queensland hires industry professionals as teachers who deliver information in a way that’s easy to understand. Their insights into what to expect in the industry make me feel well-prepared,” Luke explained.

Luke values the combination of theory and practical learning at TAFE Queensland, which helped him build confidence and competence in his skills.

“During camera classes, we start with a detailed explanation of how a camera operates and then apply that knowledge practically. Over time, we become comfortable with what we learn, eventually filming without supervision due to the excellent training we receive.”

Luke is a shining example of studying to turn his passion into his profession, seamlessly blending his love for film with his dedication to crafting productions while excelling in various roles on set.

"I am incredibly passionate and motivated, ready to take on multiple roles on any film set. My strengths lie in Art, Unit, Set Building, and Lighting. My love for film drives me to go above and beyond, ensuring that every job is done properly and efficiently,” he explains.

“My career has taught me to maintain a calm and positive attitude under pressure, boost morale and keep the team motivated. I feel I’ve built a reputation for being one of the first to arrive and the last to leave, always eager to contribute to the success of the project."

Now, with a foundation from TAFE Queensland, Luke is making his mark in the film industry, contributing to its success.
