Redlands local wins Best Editor at TAFE Queensland’s LUMA Film Festival
Redlands local Brodie McNaughton has been recognised for his creative flair and technical talent, winning Best Editor at this year’s LUMA Film Festival for his 19-minute horror-comedy short film, The Very Scary Monster.
Brodie, a 26-year-old Mt Cotton resident and student at TAFE Queensland’s Mt Gravatt campus, wrote, directed, and edited the film as part of his Diploma of Screen and Media (CUA51020) studies.
His surreal and absurd story follows a young man named Jacob who is haunted by a malevolent presence known as Timmy.
“The Very Scary Monster was inspired by a dream I had as a kid. In the dream, I watched a vintage-looking horror movie featuring a creepy guy in a suit and top hat stalking a woman who looked like a 1950s housewife. This one’s for anyone who doesn’t relate as much to mainstream horrors or comedies,” Brodie said.

The film was one of 13 selected to screen at the LUMA Film Festival, an annual event that showcases the work of graduating Diploma students.
Held at TAFE Queensland’s Mt Gravatt campus, the festival offers students the chance to debut their films in front of industry professionals, peers, and the broader community.
TAFE Queensland Film and TV Production teacher Tom Francis said Brodie’s award-winning editing stood out for its sophistication and polish.
“Brodie was awarded Best Editor due to the impressive speed and skill with which he applied complex editing techniques taught in class,” Tom said.

“The LUMA Film Festival celebrates student excellence, and we’re fortunate to have strong creative industry partnerships with sponsors like Blackmagic Design, Videopro, and RØDE.”
“We’re incredibly proud to showcase the outstanding talent emerging from our Diploma courses at Mt Gravatt.”
“The award of the Blackmagic Speed Editor to Brodie recognises not only his technical precision but his ability to craft a dynamic and engaging short film that reflects an exceptionally high level of editing skill,” said Tom.
Each year, LUMA provides a platform for TAFE Queensland’s graduating screen and media students to share their stories, gain industry exposure, and build valuable connections.
The festival also features filmmaker Q&As and a black-tie gala with awards and entertainment.
