Abi lands dream job
Abi England moved to Australia six months ago, and she’s already landed her dream job thanks to TAFE Queensland.
Abi is studying a Diploma of Music (CUA50825) (Sound Production) at TAFE Queensland’s Coomera Creative campus, where she’s gaining hands-on experience to prepare for a career in the music industry.
“It’s amazing,” said Abi.
“Honestly, I’ve learned more in the last six months than I have in my entire life.”
Originally from England, Abi chose to study at TAFE Queensland after touring the campus and seeing its cutting-edge facilities firsthand. The creative environment and practical approach to learning immediately stood out to her.
“The best thing is probably live sound because that's the career that I want to go into,” she said.
“They teach you how to mic everything up, how to sound check, how to do EQ (equalisation) - all the different parts that you need for a live performance.”
Thanks to her teacher’s industry connections, Abi and her peers had the opportunity to complete work experience at the Gold Coast’s popular live music venue, Miami Marketta, during a sold-out show.
Working alongside the professional team from Biggsounds Productions, students gained hands-on experience across every facet of the event - from bumping in the stage, PA (Public Address) systems and lighting, to assisting with soundchecks, operating during the show, and packing down at the end of the night.
The opportunity marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership, with Coomera Creative students set to be involved in a range of future events and productions at the venue.
For Abi, the experience has already turned into paid work.
“It's definitely what I want to do in my career, but I'm just really lucky, to be honest,” Abi said.
She described working at the iconic venue as surreal.
“To look at the stage… knowing that I helped set everything up, I know how it all works – it feels pretty amazing”
For Abi, combining classroom learning with real industry experience has confirmed she’s on the right career path.
“To be behind the desk and thinking ‘so this is going to be my future,” it's kind of crazy.”
