Barbering program opens doors for young First Nations students in Toowoomba

A pilot barbering program in Toowoomba is helping young First Nations students take their first steps towards a career, building their confidence, practical skills and a pathway into further training.

Delivered through TAFE Queensland, the program recently saw three of five participants graduate after completing the Barbering Skill Set (SSSHB0001) over 20 weeks from February to May 2026.

Gaining foundational skills in barbering for the industry, the program focuses on hands-on learning in a supportive environment, giving students the opportunity to explore barbering as both a creative outlet and a viable career pathway.

TAFE Queensland actively builds relationships with barber shops across the region, helping introduce students to business owners and potential employers, giving them valuable real-world experience approaching workplaces and seeking opportunities in the industry.

For participant, Ezra (pictured above), the program provided a chance to turn a long-standing interest into something more tangible.

“I’ve been wanting to get into barbering… now I feel ready to go and cut hair,” Ezra said.

The course also helped build confidence and direction, with participants gaining practical experience and insight into what it takes to work in the industry including both technical and communication skills.

“I feel like I’ve got the skills now… I’m ready to give it a go,” Ezra said.

Programs like this play an important role in creating accessible training pathways for First Nations students, particularly in regional Queensland communities.

By combining nationally recognised training with real-world application, the program supports students to build skills that can lead to employment, further study, or even small business ownership.

TAFE Queensland General Manager (South West Region), Kate Venables, said the program also highlights the impact of strong mentorship and industry-experienced teachers.

“This program shows the value of learning from industry professionals who bring real-world experience into the classroom,” Ms Venables said.

“Our students are mentored by experienced teachers like Junior Faamalele, a third-generation barber, who not only shares his skills but structures his teaching to be outcomes-focused ensuring students build confidence and leave with practical, job-ready abilities.”

“It’s also great to work hand in hand with the Queensland Government’s Department of Trade, Employment, Adapt Mentorship and Training and Lifeline Darling Downs to support young people and create meaningful training opportunities in Toowoomba.”

Adapt Mentorship Mentor, Adam Wenitong, said the program’s strength lies in the holistic support it provides to young people.

“The value of this program is in what it unlocks for our young people when they are genuinely supported,” Mr Wenitong said.

“It brings together quality training, cultural mentoring and consistent wrap-around support in a way that helps young people build confidence, reconnect with pride and see a clear pathway forward.”

“The impact is real and immediate and we see young people carrying themselves differently and moving forward with self-belief and direction.”

“It shows what’s possible when the right supports are in place and young people are backed properly from start to finish and beyond.”

As the three graduates take their next steps, the program stands as a strong example of how targeted training initiatives can support young people to build skills, confidence and future opportunities in their own community, with another round of the program set to be delivered in mid-2026.
