Building brighter futures through industry experience
For young people navigating the youth justice system, access to education and real-world training can be a turning point.
Through TAFE Queensland’s partnership with the Department of Youth Justice, programs like Transition 2 Success (T2S) are helping students take meaningful steps toward employment, confidence and a fresh start.
At the heart of this initiative is a simple but powerful approach that combines strong support networks with high-quality, industry-led training.
Following the success of the Transition 2 Success program at TAFE Queensland’s Bracken Ridge campus, participants were inspired to further their skills, and readiness for employment opportunities, and joined the public White Card course at Acacia Ridge. Delivered by expert trainers and integrated into a standard construction class, the experience gave students an authentic introduction to industry expectations.
TAFE Queensland trainer Nick Keigher said creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment is key to student success.
“We focus on meeting students where they’re at and helping them build confidence in their own ability,” Mr Keigher said. “When they’re part of a real class and working through the same training as everyone else, it reinforces that they belong here and that they can succeed, no matter their background.”
The students rose to the occasion, demonstrating strong focus, engagement and a willingness to learn. When they successfully complete their General Construction Induction Training (GCIT) Skill Set (SSCPC0029), also known within industry as a Construction White Card, it equips them with the essential safety ticket and knowledge, required to work on construction sites across Queensland in any capacity.
Nick said the outcome highlights the value of giving students genuine exposure to industry environments.
“Our White Card team was proud to host these students in our public class,” Mr Keigher said. “They showed great attitude, asked questions and gave it their all. Experiences like this show what’s possible when young people are given the right support and opportunity.”
The Transition 2 Success program is designed to help young people re-engage with education and build clear pathways into employment. By partnering with TAFE Queensland, students gain access to nationally recognised training delivered by experienced educators with strong industry connections.
Manager, Commercial Sales and Partnerships Dean Sherwell leads the program with the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support’s Transition 2 Success, and he said the collaboration is changing outcomes for young people across Queensland.
“Programs like this provide young people with the structure, skills and belief they need to move forward,” Mr Sherwell said. “TAFE Queensland’s efforts in working alongside the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support and ensure they’re learning in a professional environment, with trainers who genuinely care about their progress and future.”
Beyond gaining qualifications, students can benefit from developing practical skills, confidence and a sense of achievement.
For the students, completing their White Card represents more than just a card. It’s a step toward employment, independence and new opportunities.
By combining industry experience, quality training and strong partnerships, the program is helping young people rewrite their stories, one achievement at a time.
