Dylan prepares for the world stage

What began as a childhood curiosity about computers has become a ticket to the world stage for Dylan Wondal, who will represent Australia in cyber security at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai this September.

“I've always been interested in computers and enjoyed tinkering with them. My passion for cyber security really took off when I was in Grade 9 and stumbled on TryHackMe – a gamified, hands-on cyber security training platform,” said Dylan.

“After completing some of the labs, I was hooked and have loved it ever since, especially the offensive security side of cyber.”

That drive has taken the Security Analyst to the top of his field.

After rising above the nation’s best at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show in 2025, Dylan earned his place on the Australian team, the Skillaroos, and is now preparing to take on competitors from around the world.

“It’s a huge honour to represent Australia," he said.

"What started as a hobby and curiosity for computers has led to this incredible opportunity."

"I’m proud to wear the green and gold, and I’m excited to challenge myself against the best in the world while representing Australia and everyone who has supported me along the way."

The prestigious event is often described as the Olympics of the skilled trades, bringing together competitors from more than 70 countries and regions to compete in trade-based skills.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals.  The cyber security industry is constantly evolving, and it’s crucial to stay up to date with new technologies and threats. Events like this give us the chance to share experiences and learn from one another," said Dylan.

The Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22603VIC) graduate from TAFE Queensland’s Coomera Creative campus credits the training he’s received as a stepping stone into the industry.

“The hands-on projects were invaluable and gave me experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise,” he said.

“Since I was largely self-taught, the course helped reinforce my existing knowledge and strengthen the foundations I’d already built. It was a great opportunity to apply what I’d learned in a structured environment and gain real insight into the industry."

Support through Fee-Free TAFE has also played a key role, giving Dylan the freedom to focus on building his skills and investing in his future.

"Training for free through Fee-Free TAFE has allowed me to invest in my future,” explained Dylan.

“I was able to use the money I saved to access high-quality training platforms like TryHackMe and HackTheBox, and to work toward certifications that are highly valued in the cyber security industry.”

“It also helped me manage everyday expenses like utilities and groceries, making it easier to stay focused on learning and progressing in my career."

Now preparing to don the green and gold, Dylan is set to represent Australia on the world stage, showcasing the skill, determination and next-generation talent driving the nation’s cyber security future.
