Parramatta Eels and TAFE Queensland launch innovative hybrid institute ahead of historic Las Vegas expansion

TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport and the Parramatta Eels are set to launch an innovative new hybrid education model, with the program arriving at a landmark moment for the Club as the Eels prepare to take centre stage on the global sporting platform in Las Vegas.

The new Eels Institute program has been designed to provide students with direct exposure to the business, leadership and operational side of professional sport, while aligning with one of the biggest growth moments currently occurring within rugby league.

With the NRL’s continued expansion into the United States and the Parramatta Eels now part of the competition’s historic Las Vegas initiative, students entering the program will gain unique insight into how modern sporting organisations are evolving into global entertainment, events and commercial brands.

Delivered in partnership with TAFE Queensland, the hybrid model combines face-to-face learning at the Club’s world-class facilities with online delivery and industry intensives, creating a flexible structure designed for both school leavers and working professionals.

Parramatta Eels Education Program Manager Kirstene Ciappara said the new delivery model would create greater accessibility for future students.

“I’m excited that we can offer the best of both worlds through this hybrid study mode,” Ms Ciappara said.

“Students will learn at Parramatta Eels HQ, while also having the flexibility to balance other commitments alongside their studies.”

Students enrolled in the program will complete the Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420) and Diploma of Project Management (BSB50820) over 12 months, with delivery including:

· One day per week on campus at the state-of-the-art James Hardie Centre of Excellence in Kellyville

· One night per week of facilitated online learning

· Additional self-paced study supported by TAFE Queensland educators

· Exposure to Parramatta Eels personnel and live business projects related to the Vegas initiative

· Networking and professional development opportunities connected to the club

· Up to 50 hours of work experience across club operations

The course has been designed to provide students with direct exposure to the business and operational side of professional sport, while also building transferable leadership and project management skills relevant across a range of industries.

Importantly, the program has been built around the changing landscape of modern sport, where clubs are no longer simply football organisations, but major entertainment, events, media and community businesses operating on an increasingly international scale.

TAFE Queensland Academy of Sport Manager Don Harley said the timing of the partnership presented an exciting opportunity for students seeking to enter the industry.

“The Eels are entering a really unique phase as a club,” Mr Harley said.

“With the NRL’s push into Las Vegas and the broader international growth of the game, students are no longer just looking at local sporting opportunities. They’re getting exposure to how major sporting brands operate on a national and increasingly global stage.”

Mr Harley said the hybrid model was specifically designed to create greater accessibility into the sporting industry.

“What we’ve recognised over the past couple of years is that there’s a significant cohort of people who want access to the sporting industry, but can’t necessarily commit to a traditional full-time face-to-face model,” he said.

“This structure allows students to remain connected to the club environment while balancing work, coaching, university or other commitments.”

The Parramatta Eels partnership forms part of TAFE Queensland’s rapidly expanding Academy of Sport network, which now includes partnerships with organisations such as the Brisbane Broncos, Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Brisbane Heat.

Applications for the upcoming intake are expected to generate strong interest as students seek flexible, industry-connected pathways into one of Australia’s fastest-evolving sporting sectors.
