Fee-Free TAFE helps Elmira create a career of care and connection
Growing up surrounded by the beauty industry, 20-year-old Elmira always knew she wanted a career that helped people feel confident.
With a mum who works as a beauty therapist and an aunt who is a hairdresser, creativity, care and connection were part of everyday life.
Before starting her Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at TAFE Queensland, Elmira worked in hairdressing, where she developed strong communication skills and an understanding of how much confidence and care can impact people.
“Being in a client-focused role helped me develop strong communication skills and showed me how much confidence and care can impact people,” she said.
While her upbringing in the beauty industry sparked her interest in cosmetic nursing, Elmira wanted to build strong medical knowledge alongside her passion for aesthetics.
“Growing up around beauty showed me how confidence-boosting it can be, but I wanted the medical knowledge behind it,” she said.
“Nursing gives me a strong clinical foundation so I can practice cosmetic nursing safely and ethically.”
Elmira chose to study at TAFE Queensland because of its hands-on training, industry-aligned skills and strong reputation for preparing students for real healthcare settings.
Supported by Fee-Free TAFE funding, she has been able to focus on her studies without added financial stress.
“Fee-Free TAFE was essential, as it made studying nursing financially accessible,” she said.
While studying, Elmira is already earning while she learns, working as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) and applying her skills in real healthcare settings.
She says the practical nature of her training helped make the transition into the workforce feel seamless.
“TAFE gave me practical skills and confidence early on, which made stepping into an AIN role feel natural rather than overwhelming,” she said.
The skills Elmira has learned at TAFE Queensland, including infection control, manual handling, communication and patient care, are the same skills she uses every shift.
She credits the course’s strong workplace focus with helping her feel trusted and capable in clinical settings sooner than she expected.
When Elmira first started the course, she felt anxious and unsure, particularly as she had no prior medical experience.
She was surprised by how quickly her confidence grew through hands-on learning and real-world scenarios.
“I started feeling like I was the only one without real-world medical knowledge, but now I feel capable and prepared in clinical settings,” she said.
Elmira also praised TAFE Queensland’s modern facilities and realistic training environments, including role-playing scenarios with simulated patients, which help students learn to connect complex medical conditions and take a holistic approach to patient care.
She says the support she’s received from teachers and classmates has been a defining part of her experience.
“The teachers are supportive, approachable and genuinely invested in our success,” she said.
“My classmates create a strong sense of teamwork and encouragement. I started not knowing anyone, and now I don’t know how I’d finish my Diploma without them.”
Looking ahead, Elmira hopes to become a registered nurse specialising in cosmetic nursing and continues to build her confidence and experience through study and work.
“In the next five to ten years, I see myself as a confident cosmetic nurse with strong clinical expertise and ongoing professional development,” she said.
Reflecting on her journey so far, Elmira says TAFE Queensland has given her the foundation she needs to achieve her goals.
“TAFE Queensland has given me a strong foundation, confidence, and a clear pathway toward achieving my long-term nursing goals,” concluded Elmira.
