Forging a path forward: Adam Rutherford's journey from Country to award-winning apprentice

For Adam Rutherford, being named the MAS National Inspiring Apprentice of the Year winner at the 2026 TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech CSQ Apprentice Awards is about far more than recognition for his trade skills. It is the culmination of a journey defined by perseverance, self-belief and the courage to change the course of his life.

A fourth-year apprentice doing his Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (MEM31925) with TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech (RTO 0275), Adam has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication to his trade. Throughout his apprenticeship, he overcame longstanding literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy challenges, while managing the impacts of ADHD and other personal circumstances.

Rather than allowing these barriers to define him, Adam tackled them head-on, attending additional learning support sessions after work and continually seeking ways to strengthen his skills and knowledge. His determination saw him become one of the standout apprentices in his cohort, earning praise from teachers for his workmanship, professionalism, and commitment to learning.

Originally from St George in south-west Queensland, Adam grew up working on farms and never imagined a future in engineering.

"This award means everything and more to me," Adam said.

"I left school early and always felt like I wasn't good at anything. There were times during my apprenticeship when I didn't think I'd make it through, but I kept showing up and believing things could get better. Coming from a farming background and as a young Aboriginal man, this journey has changed my life."

"If my story can show even one young person back home that it's never too late to turn your life around, then that's something I'm really proud of. Success isn't just about becoming a qualified tradesperson. It's about becoming a better person, believing in yourself, and creating opportunities you never thought were possible."

Adam's growth throughout his apprenticeship has extended beyond technical skills. His willingness to seek support, learn from feedback, and encourage others has made him a role model among his peers.

Today, he is passionate about mentoring younger people and demonstrating the positive impact that training and education can have on a person's future for the better.

Stephen Gates, General Manager of TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech, praised Adam's achievement on the night.

"Adam's story is a powerful reminder that success is not determined by where you start, but by your willingness to keep moving forward. His resilience, determination, and commitment to personal growth have been nothing short of inspiring, and he is a thoroughly deserving recipient of this award,” Mr Gates said.

“Adam's journey demonstrates that a trade can open doors for people from all walks of life and create opportunities that change lives for the better."

Adam's story is a testament to the life-changing impact of vocational education and the power of perseverance, proving that with the right mindset, the support and that unbudgeable determination, extraordinary things are possible. Adam is a true testament to what it means to making your great happen.
