Fully funded prefab micro-credential training

The free, accessible online training is designed to help tackle emerging construction skills shortages.

The TAFE Centre of Excellence Construction Tech is leading a national prefabrication pilot program to help address emerging skills shortages driven by the growth of prefabrication, modular construction and off-site manufacturing across Australia.

The project will develop and pilot a suite of fully funded, stackable micro-credentials designed to equip apprentices and construction workers with relevant practical and theoretical skills.

There are four micro-credentials in the pilot: Set out and mark out prefabricated components onsite (MCC00208)Combine and install modular components onsite (MCC00209)Assemble and install panelised components onsite (MCC00210) and Install prefabricated pod components onsite (MCC00211) and these will support workers to develop industry-relevant capabilities that align with the growing adoption of modern methods of construction (MMC).

Delivered through mobile-friendly online learning, the micro-credentials will include interactive simulations, practical assessments and industry-focused case studies. Upon completion, participants will earn digital badges that recognise their skill development.

The pilot will also create digital learning resources, trainer materials and implementation guides, with delivery initially focused on selected TAFE Queensland carpentry apprentices. Industry consultation, validation and evaluation will help shape future expansion of the program to include a certificate qualification.

Centre Executive Director Kaz Harris-Brown said the initiative offers a timely and practical response to the workforce challenges facing Australia's rapidly expanding MMC sector, helping to build the skilled workforce needed to support future industry growth.

"This training has been designed to increase participation and skills development in an area experiencing significant workforce shortages and growing demand for skilled workers," he said.

"By being fully funded, self-paced and delivered online, the program removes many of the traditional barriers to education and training. It gives people from a wide range of backgrounds and locations the flexibility to upskill, reskill or explore new career pathways at a time that suits them."

"Importantly, it helps create a stronger pipeline of workers with the knowledge and capabilities needed to support the continued adoption of modern construction practices, while providing individuals with access to valuable, industry-relevant skills that are increasingly sought after across the sector."

Designed for accessibility and scalability, the program aims to support learners in regional and remote communities, create opportunities for First Nations learners and encourage greater participation by women in construction. Resources developed through the pilot will also be suitable for national adoption, helping build a skilled and consistent workforce across the sector.

The TAFE Centre of Excellence Construction Tech, led by TAFE Queensland, is a joint initiative between the Australian and Queensland Governments.
