Jane strengthens her career in care at the Warwick campus

Jane Harvey is building on years of industry experience by formalising her skills through study at TAFE Queensland’s Warwick campus, proving it’s never too late to invest in your future.

Currently studying a Fee-Free TAFE funded Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) (CHC33021), Jane said completing a formal qualification was a natural next step after already working in the sector.

“I’ve been working in aged care for three years, and my employer and I had a discussion and thought it was best if I became qualified,” Jane said.

“So, I made contact with the local network down at Stanthorpe, who helped enrol me into the course here at Warwick.”

Jane said the course has delivered immediate benefits to her work in the industry.

“It’s been very beneficial. Particularly the legal and ethical sides and the practical demonstrations.”

The Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) (CHC33021) is an entry-level qualification designed for those starting or advancing a career in the community services sector.

It equips students with the skills to provide individualised care in home, community, and healthcare settings, while building both technical and transferable skills such as communication and teamwork.

Students also learn to support independence and wellbeing, with specialised training focused on empowering older people, people with disability, and those living with dementia.

For Jane, the face-to-face learning experience at the Warwick campus has been key to her success.

“I wanted face-to-face learning,” she said.

“I had looked into doing an online course and found that quite difficult. TAFE Queensland was the ideal environment where I had a teacher and other students to collaborate with — it helps when you’ve got somebody to bounce things off.”

The course combines theory with hands-on practical learning, helping students apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.

“We often do theory in the morning and then practical in the afternoon,” Jane said.

“It breaks up the day really well.”

With demand for qualified workers continuing to grow across the care sector, Jane said completing the qualification will open more doors in her career.

“There’s certainly a lot of demand, particularly in the disability sector,” she said.

Jane also praised the support of her teachers at the Warwick campus, highlighting their practical experience and approachable teaching style.

“Our teacher is very easy to understand. You can ask questions at any time,” she said.

“He explains things simply and understands the industry, which really helps from a practical point of view.”

Before transitioning into aged care, Jane worked in banking and law for many years. She said the move into the care sector has brought a renewed sense of purpose.

“I wanted to do something that made me feel good,” she said.

“It just gives you that sense of helping somebody, and it’s a really nice feeling.”

Jane encourages others considering a career in the sector to take the step into study.

“I’d certainly recommend doing some study first, it makes a big difference,” she advised.

“And the work placement is so important to really see what it’s like out there.”
