Joel builds a healthcare future through dental assisting

For Joel Summerell, choosing a healthcare career was about finding a profession that offered both purpose and long-term opportunities.

Currently studying a Certificate III in Dental Assisting (HLT35021), Joel was drawn to the industry because of its unique combination of patient care, teamwork and practical, hands-on work.

“I chose to study dental assisting because I wanted to move into a practical healthcare role where I could continue learning and develop skills that are useful in a real clinical environment,” Joel said.

“I was interested in a career that combines patient care, teamwork, organisation and hands-on work. I also wanted to find a career that could not be easily replaced by Artificial Intelligence, ensuring job security and stability.”

Joel said the qualification is helping him build the skills and confidence needed to establish a meaningful and rewarding career in healthcare.

“It’s important to me because it offers an opportunity to build a meaningful, stable career in healthcare,” he said.

“I value supporting patients and contributing to a professional team environment while continuing to improve my knowledge and skills.”

Joel said the dental professionals and teachers he has met throughout his studies have reinforced his passion for the field.

“Their professionalism, knowledge and approach to patient care have strengthened my interest in the industry,” he said.

Like many students entering a new field, Joel faced the challenge of mastering a significant amount of technical knowledge and practical skills in a short period of time.

“One challenge has been adapting to a new field of study with a large amount of technical information and practical skills to learn,” he said.

“Building confidence in the clinical environment has taken persistence and consistent practice, but it has been rewarding to see steady improvement over time.”

Joel credits TAFE Queensland’s supportive teachers and realistic training environments for helping him succeed.

“The practical learning environment has been one of the most valuable parts of the course because it allows students to apply theory in a realistic clinical setting,” he said.

“The teachers have also been supportive and encouraging throughout the training.”

Training with Fee-Free TAFE has also played a significant role in making Joel’s studies achievable, reducing financial pressure and allowing him to focus on his training.

“The subsidised training definitely made the course more accessible and achievable for me,” he said.

“It reduced a significant financial barrier and made it easier to commit to studying and training properly.”

Fee-Free TAFE is helping Queenslanders gain the skills they need for in-demand industries without the burden of course fees.

By removing financial barriers to training, the initiative is making it easier for students to pursue new career opportunities, upskill for the future, and enter essential sectors such as healthcare.

For students like Joel, Fee-Free TAFE has made training more accessible, allowing them to focus on building practical skills and preparing for a rewarding career.

The savings have also helped him cover essential expenses while completing his qualification, including travel, equipment, learning materials and everyday living costs.

Looking ahead, Joel hopes to continue gaining experience in the dental industry and establish himself as a trusted member of a clinical team.

“I’m hoping to build a long-term career in the dental industry, continue gaining experience and become a confident, dependable dental assistant in a clinical setting,” concluded Joel.
